From a young star to a (in)famous villain on-screen, Kim So Yeon makes a strong comeback with “Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938”

Returning to the screen with “Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938”, actress Kim So Yeon reaffirms her acting prowess.

Actress Kim So Yeon recently appeared in “Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938”. The actress generated massive attention with her acting and has been praised for a stunning on-screen image and great chemistry with her co-stars.

In “Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938”, Kim So Yeon plays Ryu Hong Joo, a former Western mountain god who later became the owner of the top-notch restaurant in Gyeongseong – the Myoyeongak. In this timeline, Hong Joo is a lone wolf, which leads her to believe that only the strongest can befriend her. Things start to change when she sees Yi Yeon (Lee Dong Wook) in 1938.

As a mountain god and an owner of a luxury restaurant in Gyeongseong, Hong Joo appears with brightly colored outfits, which range from modern attires to traditional clothing, and extraordinary beauty.

In the past, Kim So Yeon started working in the entertainment industry when she was 14 years old. She took part in a beauty pageant without her parents’ approval. The actress shared, to make herself stand out, she had to use a maker pen as an eyeliner: “My mother was very against the whole idea of my becoming an actress, but she knew what I was doing that day. She didn’t even look at me while I was getting ready. I had no make-up products of my own, but I knew I had to apply ‘something’ on my eyes. So, I just grabbed my marker and tried to whip something up with it”.

At the “SBS Drama Awards” in 1994, Kim So Yeon won “Best Young Actress” even though she was only 14, with “Dinosaur Teacher”. Nonetheless, this drew a lot of negative reactions from the audience, who stated that she might have faked her age to receive the award.

In 2000, “The Penthouse” actress’ career took a turn when she appeared in “All About Eva”. She plays Heo Young Mi, a cunning woman who takes other people down to achieve love and fame. She made headlines back in the days and was recognized by the Korean media to be among the stars who were before her.

Nonetheless, Heo Young Mi brought her bad reputation. The public associated the actress with her character and held negative feelings toward her. It was not until 2011 when she took up a role in “Prosecutor Princess”, that she was able to receive positive feedback from the audience again. Kim So Yeon only found her way back to villain roles almost a decade later with “The Penthouse”.

Apart from her career, actress Kim is enjoying a quiet and slow life. She frequently does charity anonymously and keeps herself from the limelight.

Regarding the romantic department, she went public with her co-star Lee Sang Woo from “Happy Home” and got married in 2017. Since then, they have been working separately. The couple only appeared in “The Penthouse” together, with Lee Sang Woo being a guest star in the series.
