Foreign netizens’ reaction to Lee Sun-kyun’s drug controversy “Entirely opposite with Koreans”
While actor Lee Sun-kyun faces allegations of drug use and experiences condemnation from Korean fans, foreign fans have shown an entirely opposite reaction
On Oct 23rd, actor Lee Sun-kyun was booked by the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency’s Drug Crime Investigation Unit for marijuana and psychotropic drug use. He is accused of using drugs in significant amounts at the residence of a Gangnam entertainment establishment owner since the beginning of this year.
Lee Sun-kyun, who established himself as a global actor beyond a national actor with works like “Parasite”, has disappointed Korean fans with the sudden drug allegations. Currently, he has withdrawn from his next project “No Way Out” and is facing the termination of contracts in the advertising industry, making it unlikely for him to make a comeback as an actor.
In particular, the fact that Lee Sun-kyun, known as a family man and father in the entertainment industry, visited an entertainment establishment has shocked many people.
Last May, he was accompanied by his family to the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where he showed a great affection for them.
He mentioned in an interview, “It was really nice watching the film and doing the whole Cannes experience as a family. They stated that Koreans are excessively sensitive about drug issues, hinting at the perception that Koreans are too strict.
Such response from foreign fans spread to various Korean online communities, leading to derisive comments from Korean netizens. Netizens on the online community “FM Korea” left comments such as “Isn’t the United States the worst with drug issues right now? LOL“, “Being strict is hundreds of times better” and “I’m proud.”
