Following Tang Wei, here comes IU as all the world focus on her debut
“Tang Wei left, and IU (Lee Ji-eun) came.”
With the 75th Cannes Film Festival nearing its end, another big star has emerged to lighten up the second half of the festival. This new actress, Lee Ji-eun, is already famous to the public as singer IU.
Lee Ji-eun went to the Cannes Film Festival as the main character of the first Korean film “Broker” by Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda. The film enters the competition category to challenge the Grand Prix, the Palme d’Or.
Its rival film, which is director Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave” released on May 23rd, is increasingly likely to win the award amid hot local reviews. Along with the possibility of winning the award for both the movie and the director, the main character Tang Wei is also expected to win the award of “Best Actress”.
Tang, however, put aside the possibility of winning the award and boarded the plane. She reportedly left for China on May 25th after completing her official schedule.
All local reporters were surprised by the news of Tang Wei’s departure, but attention naturally shifted to Lee Ji-eun’s entry.
Lee Ji-eun began her official schedule in Cannes on May 25th. She also expressed her excitement by posting her photos taken at Cannes on social media.
Lee Ji-eun made her acting debut with the drama “Dream High” in 2011, after which she solidified her position as an actress by appearing in “You Are The Best,” “Producer,” “My Mister,” and “Hotel Del Luna.”
“Broker” is her first movie. “Broker” is a work that depicts the stories of people who have become involved around a baby box, which is designed to allow people who cannot raise their children to leave them there anonymously. Lee Ji-eun plays the role of a mother who left her baby in the baby box but went back to find her.
In her screen debut, she was lucky to be directed by a world-renowned director and worked with famous actors such as Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won, and Bae Doo-na. On top of that, her movie star’s debut ceremony will be held at the Cannes Film Festival, which is considered the best among the world’s top three international film festivals. Lee’s debut here is expected to be a more spectacular debut than any other actor.
Deadline, an American media outlet, said of IU, “She is a Korean actress, singer and composer. She has a huge number of fans, including 26 million Instagram followers. She is described as a “national treasure star” in Korea. Now IU must be ready to succeed as her first commercial film.”
“Broker” will be shown to 2,500 audiences at the Cannes Lumiere Grand Theatre at 6:45 p.m. on May 26th.
