In an interview with Money Today on Dec 27th, Profiler – Woosuk University’s Department of Police Administration Professor Bae Sang-hoon stated this.
According to the Seongbuk Police Station, Lee Sun-kyun was found dead in a car parked near Waryong Park in Jongno-gu, Seoul at around 10:30 AM on Dec 27th. It was just a day after he requested a lie detector test from the police.
With Lee Sun-kyun’s sudden death, the issue of police responsibility has been raised. Experts point out that the police’s confidential investigation information leaked externally before Lee Sun-kyun was booked, and Lee Sun-kyun was not adequately protected in terms of his right to defense. Some even argue that the tragedy originated from the exposure of private life during the police investigation process.
Regarding this, Professor Bae analyzed, “Lee Sun-kyun wouldn’t have made such an extreme choice just because he had something to hide about drugs. During the police investigation process, his private life was completely exposed and his honor was compromised, (psychologically) causing distress.”
He further explained, “The fact that he requested a lie detector test the day before his death means he was quite enraged. Psychology has ambivalence (the coexistence of conflicting emotional states). It’s appropriate to say that he made (an extreme choice) due to the collapse of emotions related to injustice and anger.”
Professor Bae emphasized that since Lee Sun-kyun was an actor who made a living with his image, the police should have paid more attention to security during the investigation. The exposure of confidential information, including private life, caused further psychological distress for Lee Sun-kyun.
Professor Bae argued that the police pressured Lee Sun-kyun by leaking hints that could imply the relationship between him and entertainment establishment head A.
He pointed out, “Continuously leaking hints externally about their relationship might have pressured Lee Sun-kyun. After he denied using drugs, comments about his relationship with A continued. In the end, he fell into a pit.”
