Eunhyuk “I haven’t overcome the shock of my father’s death… I’ll forget my sadness with ‘FUERZA BRUTA'”
“I haven’t overcome it yet. Even now, when I’m alone, I sometimes cry.”
Super Junior Eunhyuk‘s eyes became teary. Fans were surprised as Eunhyuk’s father suddenly passed away ahead of the “SUPER JUNIOR WORLD TOUR – SUPER SHOW 9 : ROAD in MANILA” concert in Manila, Philippines on Aug 6th.
That’s probably because his father challenged to become a senior model on KBS2’s “Mr. House Husband 2” and appeared on Eunhyuk’s YouTube channel until just before his death. In the end, Eunhyuk and Super Junior had no choice but to cancel their Manila concert. This is the first time Eunhyuk has told the media his true feelings since his father’s death.
“I think I’ll live with this pain for the rest of my life. I still can’t get it sorted. Fortunately, there are many good people around me. Members, staff and fans… I feel grateful for their existence.”
He did everything he could to forget his sadness. Just in time, an offer to appear in the performance “FUERZA BRUTA WAYRA IN SEOUL” (hereinafter referred to as “FUERZA BRUTA”). “FUERZA BRUTA” is Argentina’s representative non-verbal show and is an audience-participating performance that takes place in all spaces, including walls and ceilings, without boundaries between stage and audience.
Through music, dance and special effects, various emotions that humans feel are expressed through performances. The show has been underway at FB Theater, Jamsil Sports Complex, Songpa-gu, Seoul since Sep 29th. Eunhyuk will make his first appearance on Oct 28th.
He will appear in the “CORREDOR” scene in the play, pass through the audience and present a performance of breaking while running through the walls stacked with paper boxes. In addition, he plans to catch the audience’s attention with performances that defy gravity, such as flying through the theater while using a wire, descending through a long transparent tunnel that runs from the ceiling to the floor…
This is Eunhyuk’s second appearance in “FUERZA BRUTA”. In 2019, when senior singer HOT Jang Hyuk took on the role of “CORREDOR”, he appeared on the show for a while.
“At first, (Choi) Yeojin noona invited me, so I went to see it with Shindong hyung and fell in love with it. Shindong hyung and I are in charge of directing Super Junior’s ‘Super Show’, and even if it’s not our concert, I thought that we would like to Koreanize such a concert at least once. At that time, I was lucky enough to participate in the show, and my desire grew even stronger. As the show took a three-year break due to the pandemic, I longed for when I would be able to do this again. After hearing the news of the resumption of concerts in Korea, I thought that if I had the opportunity, I would do it unconditionally. It was really nice to have the opportunity to immerse myself in it and devote my time to it.”
The core of Fuerza Bruta’s performance is the force against gravity. Strong stamina and core muscles should be supported. Eunhyuk is one of the best K-pop performers, but even for him, it is not an easy challenge.
“I’m taking care of my physical strength and stretching rather than building a body. I have a lot of overseas schedules, so I keep working out at the hotel gym. I focus on training to increase muscular endurance and stamina. I’ve injured a rib during a concert before, so even now, every time I kick a wire, my stomach hurts. It bruises and swells when I wear a protector, but it’s so much fun and exciting that I want to keep doing it.”
The joy of flying, the pleasure of achieving what he set out to do, and, above all, the desire to be closer to his father from up there may have made Eunhyuk forget his pain.
“It feels completely different from Super Show. Although communication with the audience is important at our concert, the role of the audience is even more important in Fuerza Bruta’s show because there is no boundary between the audience and the stage. They act as actors in a big performance, not just as spectators. The biggest difference is whether the audience is drunk or not? (laughs) Super Show attendees are prohibited from drinking.”
Although they have already entered their 17th year since their debut in 2005, Eunhyuk and Super Junior are still active as K-pop leaders. Now that their fans who were in middle and high school back in the day have gotten married and even brought their kids to the concert hall, Eunhyuk feels a sense of change and even envy. He confessed, “I also have hopes of getting married.”
“I envy the way our fans spend their time with us, share memories and enjoy their lives, and how well they manage their lives. Sooner or later, I think we will have to create a family zone for the Super Show audience. TVXQ’s Changmin from our agency recently became a father. He is truly cool and respectable. After my father passed away, I also wanted to have my own family and show it to my mother. I’m not sure who will get married first among our members,” said Eunhyuk.
