The entertainment industry in Taiwan was shaken after singer-songwriter Eli Hsieh, born in 1993, was reported missing on August 21.
A friend shared a post urging anyone who had seen him to come forward, as his family and friends had been unable to contact him since his last social media update on August 11.
Netizens quickly joined the search, expressing deep concern as Eli’s disappearance came during a period of instability in his personal life.
Eli Hsieh, who has battled depression since his teenage years and endured bullying severe enough to force him to change schools three times, was known to be struggling with financial debt and personal issues. Earlier this year, he publicly admitted to borrowing from loan sharks, and he faced two run-ins with the police in 2025—one in January over accusations involving an ex-girlfriend, and another in June tied to fraud allegations.
Fans feared the worst, but in the early hours of August 24, Eli Hsieh broke his silence with a long, emotional post on social media.
He began with an apology: “I’m sorry for worrying everyone, and thank you to those who’ve helped me. Every day, I take 19 pills for my mental health. When I ran out, I tried to sleep as much as possible to avoid doing anything foolish.”
Hsieh opened up about his despair: “The shadow of death has followed me for over a decade. Even living simply is a struggle. I sing songs that encourage others to live bravely, yet I constantly think of dying.”
On his debts, he reassured fans he is working hard, selling belongings, and receiving support from colleagues to pay them off gradually.

He also addressed false rumors: “If I had truly stabbed my ex-girlfriend, would I still be here releasing music, holding concerts, talking to you all? Those who believe in me don’t need explanations. I won’t waste time on those who don’t.”
Concluding his message, Eli Hsieh wrote: “It’s hard to exist in this world, but I still have debts to repay. As for the future, I’ll leave it to fate. I’m sorry for worrying everyone. I’m okay and taking my medicine. I’m just disappointed in myself and in human nature.”
Eli Hsieh is a Taiwanese singer, songwriter, and producer, celebrated for his unique blend of pop, folk, and rock. He rose to fame after appearing on Super Star Avenue and solidified his career with his debut album Progress Reports (2015), which earned him the Best New Artist Award at the prestigious Golden Melody Awards in 2016.
His music often reflects personal struggles, loneliness, and self-discovery, with heartfelt lyrics and an emotive voice that resonates deeply with listeners. Some of his most beloved songs include “Your Luggage” and “The Light.”
