The Grammys 2023 has been all about Beyonce as the singer recorded a total of 32 Grammy trophies, becoming the artist with the most Grammy wins in the history of the award. Even Beyonce could not hide her emotions.
Noticeably, as Beyonce was announced winner of the “Best Dance/ Electronic Recording” with “Break My Soul,” the camera caught a controversial moment when DJ Diplo mouthed, “They bought that.” Everything was recorded live and the incident was spread quickly online.
Known as a renowned DJ and music producer, DJ Diplo has worked with countless famous artists such as Madonna, Shakira, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, CL, G-Dragon, Bad Bunny and even Beyonce herself in several releases within “Lemonade” and “Run The World (Girls)” in 2011. He was slammed with criticism for speaking ill of the singer despite having record of working with her before.
Viewers believed he was “being rude” and only did so to “seek attention” from the audience, given that the ceremony was broadcast live. Moreover, netizens were sure that Beyonce deserved the award and thought tha the remark was not less notorious than Kanye West’s “mic-stealing” incident in the old days.
Nevertheless, a group of viewers defended Diplo’s behavior as a pure joke, taking into account his facial expression and past amicable history with Beyonce. Yet, in the end, the displeased audience members believed the joke was not funny, if it was one, considering the context.
