Director of “Alien” hopes it can be a Korean “Avengers” with its A-list cast including So Ji-sub, Ryu Jun-yeol, Kim Woo-bin, and Kim Tae-ri

After 7 years, director Choi Dong-hoon has returned with his first new film “Alien” with Ryu Jun-yeol, Kim Woo-bin and Kim Tae-ri.

Director Choi Dong-hoon, Ryu Jun-yeol, Kim Woo-bin, Kim Tae-ri, So Ji-sub, Yeom Jung-ah, Cho Woo-jin and Kim Eui-sung attended the press conference for the first part of the movie “Alien” at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of July 13th.

The first part of “Alien” is a new film directed by Choi Dong-hoon, who directed “Tazza,” “The Thieves” and “Assasination.” The movie tells the story of a door of time opened between the Taoists who are trying to take over the god’s sword in the late Goryeo Dynasty and those who chase aliens imprisoned in the human body in 2022.

Director Choi Dong-hoon said that CG was the most important part of production in “Alien,” adding, “It was difficult to realize all the airships, robots, and aliens in the movie without CG’s help. I didn’t know much about CG, so I studied it while filming. The biggest concern was the design. I had to find boundaries that were neither too strange nor too familiar. I thought about how to show the CG in a simple way.”

“Alien” is a movie of science fiction genre that combines the classic tales with modern times, and it might remind the audience of the movie “Jeon Woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard” directed by Choi Dong-hoon in 2009. Director Choi said, “To be honest, this kind of movie is of an unfamiliar genre and it’s hard to get close to the audience. So I was rebelliously wondering “Is it really like that?” The audience is ready to watch any movie, so we (movie makers) were the ones put in a frame.”

“I heard a lot of bad things at the time that ‘Tazza’ and ‘Jeon Woo-chi’ were like children’s movies. But as time passed, I met people from abroad who asked me to sign DVDs. I thought that 13 years would be both long and short, but showing it through genre confluence was also a suitable thing to do to create changes in Korean movies. It’s a genre that I wanted to challenge myself without fear,” he explained.

Ryu Jun-yeol, who plays the role of Eol Chi-gi, tried doing martial arts action this time. “I watch a lot of Chinese martial arts movies and discuss with the director and the martial arts team a lot. In the end, I have studied a lot about how to look similar to them (Chinese martial arts actors). They are actors who are close to being martial artists. That is why I practiced using my body a lot, focusing on mechanical gymnastics for more than six months to a year,” he said.

Acting as a guard escorting an alien prisoner, Kim Woo-bin demonstrated an action scene against CG by breaking it down. He said, “It was difficult because it was an action scene where I imagined things that didn’t exist. At first, I was worried, but the martial arts team members and the director helped me so much on the spot that I was able to film it easily,” he said.

Kim Woo-bin, who played four roles one by one in the movie, said, “To express the four characters’ differences, I was little by little word of how to show the difference in energy that each person has. I hope  that the characteristics will be seen well,” he stressed.

Kim Tae-ri, who plays Lee Ahn, a character who found a mysterious sword, said of her collaboration with Ryu Jun-yeol, “I was very nervous during the first shoot. I couldn’t concentrate well because I was afraid. Jun-yeol smiled cutely at the scene and called me “Tae-ri ya,” so I felt comfortable from that moment on. We have reached a level where we can guess what the other is thinking by 90% just by making eye contact. I feel like he’s a comrade to me,” she said, showing off their teamwork.

The first part of “Alien” explains the worldview and character introduction connecting the present and Goryeo, and the characters’ past and present. The second part is scheduled to be released in 2023. Director Choi Dong-hoon said, “Scenarios about traveling back and forth between time and space were too difficult to write. Although it is no new story, I wanted to create a fresh structure. I wanted the structure to make it fun for the audience to predict and miss the drama together,” he said. “I spent two and a half years writing it and wrote it again so that the movie could look easy to watch. I think I did it because I wanted the audiences to enjoy the whole thing well from the beginning,” he explained.

“Alien” is going to compete with many blockbusters at the peak summer season. Kim Eui-sung said, “We are likely to have a war between big movies. I hope the audience enjoys this war. Of course, I hope our movie will win first place.”

Kim Woo-bin said, “Our movie is much more fun to watch on a big screen and listen to loud sounds. I hope you can come to the theater and watch it,” he said, mentioning the charm of the movie. Director Choi Dong-hoon said, “I wanted to make a movie as interesting as “Avengers” in a Korean way. I hope this movie will be a little fun and comforting for the audience,” he said.
