Contract Marriage Emerges As A Trend In Recent K-Dramas, Why?

Various Korean dramas about fake marriages have been introduced recently

According to broadcasting reports on October 5th, contract marriage has emerged as a trend in the drama industry. 

Scheduled to premiere on November 24th, SBS’s “My Demon” tells a fantasy romance between a devilish chaebol heiress and a demon who temporarily loses his power when they get married on a contract.

Kim Yoo-jung appears as Do-hee, the future heiress of a conglomerate. Surrounded by enemies on all sides, she realized the nature of the world early and became a coldhearted and rational person. However, Do-hee is cynical about love. Song Kang takes on the role of Jung Gu-won, a flawless and deadly demon. Having ruled the predators for more than 200 years, he suddenly loses his power after getting entangled with Do-hee and must protect her to prevent himself from himself from become extinct.

Airing its first episode on the same day, MBC’s Fri-Sat drama “The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract” also depicts a fake marriage.

Based on a novel of the same name, it tells the story of Park Yeon-woo (Lee Se-young), a Joseon widow who travels to the year 2023 when she is thrown into a well after the death of her husband, meeting Kang Tae-ha, a man with the same face as her late husband and marry him on a contract. Bae In-hyuk plays Kang Tae-ha, a rational and expressionless man who has both a handsome appearance and extraordinary talents.

Starring Shin Min-ah and Kim Young-dae, “Because I Want No Loss” is another drama about contract marriage. It will air on TVING and tvN next year. Centering on the romance between Son Ji-young, a woman who has a fake wedding because she doesn’t want to lose money, and Kim JI-wook, a man who becomes a fake groom because he doesn’t want to avoid her.

MBN’s ongoing weekend drama “Perfect Marriage Revenge” also features a man and a woman getting married on a contract. In particular, it’s a revenge drama about Han Yi-joo (Jung Yoo-min), a woman who has a contract marriage with Seo Do-guk (Sung Hoon) to avenge her husband and his family.

Contract marriage has been a popular theme in K-dramas since long ago. The general framework of the characters getting married first and then falling in love with each other is predictable, but each drama captivates and excites viewers with a different portrayal of marriage fantasy.

In this regard, Yoon Seok-jin, a Professor of Korean literature at Chungnam National University and a drama critic, said, “Nowadays, marriage is no longer as important as it used to be, but the delusion of marriage that viewers want to see in dramas remain”, adding “Trying to reflect this change in social perception of marriage, contract marriage seems to gain attention as a drama material”.
