“Concrete Utopia” Park Bo Young reveals her process of overcoming slump, “I told myself that I’m not Lee Byung Hun”

Actress Park Bo Young talked about when she suffered a slump after watching Lee Byung Hun’s acting.

On August 2nd, Park Bo Young had an interview at a cafe in Sogyeok-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and shared various things about her new movie “Concrete Utopia” (director Uhm Tae Hwa) and her life.

“Concrete Utopia” is a movie that begins when survivors gather at the only remaining apartment in Seoul after the whole city was devastated by a huge earthquake. Park Bo Young takes on the role of Myeong Hwa, who does not want to lose her faith even when facing the reality that everything has collapsed, and showcases a new acting transformation.

Regarding the reason she joined “Concrete Utopia” project, Park Bo Young said, “50% was because the scenario attracted me, and 50% was because of Lee Byung Hun”. She explained, “There were many times when I had to exclaim out of admiration because of his acting. Watching his acting, I remember that I even wrote in my diary, ‘Why am I such an incompetent actress? You should learn from someone like him’”.

She confessed, “Senior actor Lee Byung Hun doesn’t need to warm up but can still immerse himself in the role perfectly. Watching his acting more and more, I found myself suffering a slump. The process of me approaching my character Myeong Hwa was quite slow. I faced various obstacles and always felt like I lacked 2%. However, he (Lee Byung Hun) always got it right and even had multiple correct answers”, adding “Acting alongside him made me feel like I’m not good enough.”

When asked about the way she overcame her slump, Park Bo Young shared, “I kept telling myself, ‘I’m not Lee Byung Hun’. Senior actor Lee always did everything perfectly. The same is true for his attitude towards the staff and his attitude when acting. Since he has done more projects than the director, he thought it would be hard for the director to ask him to do something else. That’s why senior actor Lee always asked the director if he would like to modify anything first.”

The actress said, “After working together, I became more comfortable with him. It was a little difficult when we were working on the movie”, adding “It was partly because of our characters. Since my character is afraid of Young Tak (Lee Byung Hun), I thought it would help if there were tension and distance between us during the filming process. I believed that getting close to senior actor Lee too quickly might interfere with how I faced Young Tak in the movie.”
