CJ ENM has officially partnered with Japan’s major broadcaster TBS to produce a new K-pop-themed drama titled DREAM STAGE, scheduled to air as part of TBS’s Friday drama lineup.

Set in the competitive K-pop industry, DREAM STAGE tells the story of a disgraced producer who teams up with seven Korean trainees from a small entertainment agency. Together, they challenge a dominant major label group, forming emotional bonds that transcend nationality and generation.

The series stars Nakamura Tomoya as a so-called “genius producer,” alongside Lee Yi-kyung, Ikeda Elaiza, Hayoung, and Iwase Yoji. It is jointly produced by CJ ENM and TBS, with full-scale collaboration extending beyond drama production into idol styling, choreography, teaser content, and mock group promotions.

In the drama, Nakamura Tomoya’s character leads underdog trainees from the small agency group NAZE, managed by a Korean CEO (played by Hayoung) and overseen by a Japanese manager (Ikeda Elaiza).

Their rival, TORINNER, is a top-tier idol group from a major Korean agency but its lineup is majority Japanese, with additional Korean and American members. The group’s producer is portrayed by Kim Jae-kyung, while Lee Yi-kyung plays a powerful, charismatic executive figure within the K-pop industry.

This narrative choice placing a Japanese male producer at the center of a K-pop success story has become the most controversial aspect of the project.

As soon as posters and teaser materials were released, online communities particularly Korean K-pop fans reacted with skepticism and criticism.

Some of the most widely shared comments include:

  • You can already tell it’s going to be boring just from the poster.
  • Is this supposed to be fun? It’s so predictable you can already see exactly how it’ll play out.
  • ‘Genius producer’ lol. That alone makes me laugh. They really can’t let go of that trope.
  • It doesn’t look much different from the Northeast Project. Why drag Japan into K-pop?
  • There’s a reason people call CJ ‘China Japan,’ you know.
  • Please keep this among yourselves. Go ‘conquer the world’ on your own.
  • I like Nakamura Tomoya, but I don’t want to see him like this. What even is this?
  • Another delusional ‘world domination’ fantasy.

Industry observers note that DREAM STAGE reflects CJ ENM’s long-term strategy of exporting K-pop as a pan-Asian and global IP, rather than a strictly Korean cultural product.

The project includes:

  • Fictional idol teasers released like real K-pop debuts
  • Behind-the-scenes “documentary” content
  • Variety-style spin-offs tied to the drama’s universe

These efforts blur the line between fiction and real K-pop marketing, a move some praise as innovative and others criticize as overreach.

Whether DREAM STAGE succeeds or fails, it is already functioning as a litmus test for how far audiences are willing to accept cross-border reinterpretations of K-pop.
