In the 12th and final episode, aired on September 28, Prince Jesan (played by Choi Gwi Hwa) met his end at the hands of his nephew Yi Heon (Lee Chae Min). When confronted, Jesan declared, “I corrected everything through the coup. You were never meant to be king. It should have been me on the throne from the very beginning.” His hidden ambition to seize power was finally laid bare.
Yi Heon, realizing the truth, fought back in a decisive duel. Despite Jesan’s determination, he was ultimately defeated, uttering his final words, “The king of Joseon should have been me,” before collapsing.
The finale also featured a shocking twist, as Yeon Ji Young (Im YoonA) took a fatal blow in place of Yi Heon, only to be transported back to the future. The drama ended on a heartfelt note with Yi Heon and Ji Young reuniting in a romantic kiss.
Following the broadcast, online communities lit up with praise for Choi’s performance: “His villain acting was incredible,” and “The finale was carried by Jesan.” Some international viewers even left Korean curse words like “saekiyyaa!!!” and “shibal” in his comments section, a surprising indicator of how immersed they were in his villainous portrayal. Choi humorously responded, “I must live long. Even foreigners are swearing at me? Hahaha.”
With a career spanning from comedic roles in Misaeng: Incomplete Life to his chilling turn in Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, Choi Gwi Hwa once again showcased his impressive versatility and left a lasting impression.
