China’s “prison bar” trend is taking nightlife by storm, popping up in cities like Qingdao (Shandong), Hangzhou (Zhejiang), and Chongqing. Inspired partly by Netflix’s hit series Orange is the New Black, these themed bars offer customers an unusual experience: living a night in a prison cell.

At these bars, guests slip into orange prison uniforms, sign a mock “confession,” and pose for mugshot-style photos before being escorted to their own “cell.” The interiors are decorated with steel bars, graffiti-stained walls, and old newspapers, giving the space a gritty, jail-like feel.

To enhance the realism, many bars also feature a dark “interrogation room” filled with handcuffs, shackles, and even batons as props. Staff, dressed as stern guards, act as wardens—reminding customers to follow the “rules,” such as not damaging furniture.

Drinks like cocktails, sodas, or coffee cost about 50 yuan (USD 7), while renting an orange inmate uniform is an extra 10 yuan (USD 1.4). Each customer receives a “criminal file” with their mock charges, completing the full role-play experience.

On social media, many visitors rave about the novelty. “The lighting and decor are perfect for photos. I’ve already recommended it to my friends,” one customer said.

Another added, “I went at 10 p.m. on a weekday and still had to wait 20 minutes. The place was packed.”

Still, the concept isn’t without controversy. Critics argue that transforming prisons into entertainment venues trivializes the seriousness of law enforcement and can be insensitive toward victims and their families.
