For years, Cha In Pyo was believed to be the privileged heir of Woosung Shipping, one of South Korea’s largest maritime logistics conglomerates. Known as the eldest son of Chairman Cha Su Woong, the actor was rumored to have turned down an astronomical $300 billion fortune to pursue acting. However, he recently spoke out to set the record straight on long-standing misconceptions.

In a candid revelation, Cha shared that many aspects of his background have been exaggerated or distorted. “My father was a businessman. After he and my mother separated, he left the family. From then on, my two siblings and I were raised by our mother,” Cha recalled. Though his father supported their education financially, Cha felt the pressure of public perception and financial instability. “My mother once told me ‘Let’s go to America and start over’, and that’s how I ended up moving abroad.”

At the age of 20, Cha In Pyo arrived in the U.S. with limited English skills. He enrolled in a local community college and worked evening shifts to support himself. He eventually transferred to a public university and earned a degree in economics, proving that his path was built on hard work rather than privilege.

After graduating, he worked as a salesman in New York for a year but found it unfulfilling. “I was going through personal difficulties and ended up quitting—partly voluntarily, partly not. I returned to Korea and remained unemployed until I started acting. Life is unpredictable,” he said.

His confession shocked the public, who had long believed he lived a life of luxury as a chaebol heir. Instead, Cha built his acting career from the ground up, never once relying on his father’s reputation. He remained committed to his craft, even giving up U.S. citizenship to serve in the Korean military—a move praised by fans.

Cha In Pyo is known for starring in hit dramas like “Star in My Heart”, “The Boss”, “White Tower”, “Gyebaek” and “Endless Love”. In July 2023, the spotlight returned to him when his father, Chairman Cha Su Woong, passed away at the age of 83. The funeral was held on July 11, 2023 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Seoul. Both Cha and his wife, actress Shin Ae Ra, publicly mourned his passing.

Following the funeral, public interest reignited regarding who would inherit Woosung Shipping, the fourth-largest shipping company in South Korea and tenth globally. Channel A reported that Cha In Pyo and his two brothers all declined their inheritance. Cha explained, “There are people who dedicated their entire lives to the company. Handing it over to us—who know nothing about shipping makes no sense.” It was later revealed that Chairman Cha had sold all his shares to a joint venture, indicating that a family succession was never intended.

Despite declining the inheritance, Cha In Pyo’s personal life remains fulfilling. Contrary to his tough on-screen persona, he is known as a devoted family man. He married actress Shin Ae Ra in 1995 after co-starring in “Love is in Your Embrace”. The couple welcomed a son in 1998 and later adopted two daughters in 2005 and 2008—treating them with equal love and care.

While some criticized their openness about adoption, Shin Ae Ra disagreed, calling her daughters “angels sent by God” and encouraging them to reconnect with their birth families in the future. Today, their five-member family is seen as a model of warmth and unity in the entertainment industry.

Cha and Shin Ae Ra also give back generously, donating to orphanages and charitable causes. They’ve been honored by the South Korean government for their social contributions and are frequently lauded as role models—not only for their philanthropy but also for their unshakeable love. Married for 30 years, Cha remains famously affectionate, reportedly telling his wife “I love you” five to six times a day, even when traveling for work.

Though he walked away from unimaginable wealth, Cha In Pyo’s life story proves that values, perseverance and love are priceless. His journey continues to inspire fans across generations.
