Celebrities Reveal Struggles Behind Controversies over Professionalism on Stage: From Narcolepsy to Frequent Injuries

The behind-the-scenes situations of stars who were engulfed in controversies over professionalism are being revealed belatedly.

On BBC’s podcast ‘Dua Lipa: At Your Service’ aired on July 14th (local time), BLACKPINK Jennie shared various stories about the time she spent in New Zealand and her life as a K-pop idol.

Jennie said, “I would constantly hurt myself during performances and lives compared to other girls. It was just a stressful thing in my life,” and added, “I feel like I’ve disappointed my fans at some point where it seems like I wasn’t giving my best. I did not know how to control my body and use my body the way I should.”

She also shared, “I am learning how to take care of my body. I have learned a lot about myself, such as how my muscles work and how my arms bend.

Jennie’s remarks indirectly mentioned the controversy surrounding her lackluster performances. In the past, some netizens criticized Jennie for her “lazy dancing” based on some of her performance videos.

On the other hand, during SBS’s ‘Strong Heart’ aired last month, Urban Zakapa’s Jo Hyun Ah confessed that she had suffered from narcolepsy in the past, which caused attitude controversies.

Jo Hyun Ah revealed that when faced with rude situations or being ignored during media interviews, she would experience stress, leading to symptoms of narcolepsy. She recalled, “Suddenly, I felt sleepy. The situation where the members kept making excuses, saying ‘Hyun Ah is not feeling well,’ continued to repeat.”

The symptoms did not discriminate by time or place. Jo Hyun Ah lamented, “Even during concerts, I kept yawning, so I had to announce it in advance. I said, ‘Everyone, I keep yawning, but it’s not because I’m tired, so please don’t misunderstand,’ and while singing, I yawned. Isn’t it easy to misunderstand?” She also pleaded, “Recently, it doesn’t happen anymore, and I have improved a lot through treatment. It was because of the illness, not for any other reason.”

As artists like Jennie and Jo Hyun Ah who could not provide significant explanations for the attitude controversies arising from certain incidents finally confess their behind-the-scenes situations, netizens are voicing their support for them.
