During her appearance on the variety show All the Way to the Flowers 2, Carina Lau joined fellow guests Ning Jing, Liu Xiaoqing, and Ye Ziqi to discuss the topic of motherhood. When asked, “Have you ever thought that having a child would bring happiness?”, Carina responded candidly.

“I think I’d be happy being around children, but most of the time, I wouldn’t be. I’d feel burdened by the lifelong responsibility. That’s why I hesitated. I didn’t want to take on that much responsibility. I want to live my own life well,” she explained.

She added, “Children bring a lot of joy, but they can also bring a lot of anxiety. If I could choose again, I would still decide not to have children.”

Actress Liu Xiaoqing echoed Carina’s sentiment, firmly stating, “I also chose not to have children.”

In contrast, He Saifei took a different stance, expressing her support for motherhood and sharing her own experiences. “Children bring a kind of warmth that nothing else in life can replace,” she said. “That kind of real, earthly love is wonderful. Whether or not you have children makes a real difference. Even if you end up in a nursing home one day, it won’t feel the same.”

Ning Jing, who is a mother herself, said, “I thought very carefully before deciding to have a child. I believed I could raise my child well on my own.”

Carina Lau’s comments sparked mixed reactions from viewers. While some criticized her as being “shortsighted” or “selfish,” many others defended her decision, emphasizing that choosing not to have children is a personal path that should be respected especially for women navigating their own realities in midlife.

Carina Lau rose to fame as a TVB actress in the 1990s, starring in major titles like Legend of the Condor Heroes, Police Cadet, and Take Care, Your Highness!. She has been married to renowned actor Tony Leung Chiu Wai for nearly 20 years. Despite not having children, the couple enjoys a wealthy and peaceful life together.
