As a classic of Chinese television, Journey to the West has seen numerous adaptations over the years. However, not all versions achieved the same level of success as the iconic 1986 series.

Among them, the portrayal of Sun Wukong in Journey to the West: The Sequel by Cao Rong stands out as one of the most controversial. The drama, which he also directed, sparked widespread debate. His performance was criticized for stiff expressions, a chaotic rewritten script, and was even described as a disaster.

“The Ugliest Sun Wukong on Screen”

Few people know that Cao Rong originally joined the 1998 Journey to the West production as an action director. He was highly regarded for his professional martial arts choreography. At the time, due to limited budget, he was also cast in a minor role.

In 2000, Journey to the West: The Sequel quickly drew attention from audiences. In this version, Cao Rong not only starred as Sun Wukong but also served as producer, director, and action director. While the role brought him fame, it was largely negative.

From character design to storyline and visual effects, the drama left audiences disappointed. The makeup of Sun Wukong was considered unappealing, and Cao Rong failed to convey the character’s intelligence, agility, and righteousness.

Many believed that the portrayal of Sun Wukong by Liu Xiao Ling Tong was so iconic that it cast an overwhelming shadow, making it difficult for any actor to surpass. As a result, Cao Rong was branded the “ugliest Sun Wukong on screen.”

Additionally, the drama’s heavily altered plot frustrated viewers, as it deviated too far from the original story and audience expectations.

In 2020, Cao Rong attempted a sequel titled Dinghai Shenzhen, but it failed both commercially and critically. The visual effects were mocked as outdated, resembling those from 20 years earlier. By then, nearing 60, he also lacked the agility needed to portray the mischievous and powerful Monkey King.

Leaving Showbiz to Farm in His 60s

Following the failures of his Journey to the West adaptations, Cao Rong gradually stepped away from acting, focusing instead on behind-the-scenes work such as action directing.

Over the years, he has largely disappeared from the screen. Leaving the entertainment industry, he chose a quiet life in his hometown in Hunan, China. He frequently shares glimpses of his daily life on social media with fans.

According to Chinese media, Cao Rong has accepted that his acting career is unlikely to continue. Coupled with the high cost of living in Hong Kong, he decided to return to his hometown. Some fans have even spotted him dancing in public squares, where he cheerfully interacts with those who recognize him.

Now in his 60s, Cao Rong remains single. In videos he shares, the once-famous actor appears busy with farming work, including raising pigs. He has also drawn attention for openly and cheerfully showing fans his daily routines, such as preparing feed and tending to livestock.
