“Burning Sun” case’s first informant recalled being framed, assaulted and sentenced for speaking the truth

The first informant of the "Burning Sun" case Kim Sang-kyo was convicted of sexual harassment.

The latest episode of MBC’s “PD Notebook,” which aired on July 2nd, re-examined the Burning Sun case that shocked the entertainment industry in 2019 under the title “Burning Sun, the Story We Missed.”

Kim Sang-kyo, who first reported Burning Sun, appeared on the show. “I think I’ll go crazy just for speaking about this. It’s like hell,” he said. “It’s really hard, and I lived a life that I can’t go through. I felt like I was standing in front of the hell gate every day.”

Kim was put on trial in November 2018 on charges of sexually harassing three women and interfering with the work of Burning Sun Club, which was run by singer Seungri. The Supreme Court confirmed a one-year prison term and a two-year suspension of execution for him.

Kim said, “I went to Burning Sun for the first time in November 2018. I was assaulted when I went out for a call from my friends, which I received while I was falling asleep in the club,” and added, “I reported it to the police, but I was arrested as a criminal.” The police even assaulted him. He said, “I was hit three times, once in the police car, while entering the double door of the police station, and inside the police station.”

According to the broadcaster, police analyzed CCTV for evidence of Kim’s sexual harassment for more than three months. However, his lawyer Kim Jeong-hwan questioned, “He molested five people for 10 minutes. Why didn’t any victim complain about him? It’s a strange situation.”
