BTS became the target of online racist remarks following SZA’s controversial tweet
Because of SZA’s ambiguous statement, BTS got dragged into an unnecessary controversy.
At the American Music Awards 2021 on November 22, BTS won three major awards, including Artist Of The Year. A day before the AMAs took place, Jungkook, Jimin, J-Hope and V were spotted at Harry Styles‘ concert. The 4 members took social media by storm with their appearance. However, after the concert, a controversy related to BTS erupted on Twitter.
Specifically, at Harry Styles’ show, BTS members sat next to two American female singers, Lizzo and SZA. BTS created a stir with the moment they took photos with Lizzo. However, many netizens wonder why SZA didn’t take pictures with BTS.
When asked why only Lizzo took pictures with BTS while SZA didn’t, this is SZA’s response, but she deleted this tweet shortly after:
Because of this misleading tweet by SZA, BTS was criticized as “racist”. Some fans of the female singer tried to defend her while attacking BTS with racist remarks and malicious comments.
After these comments appeared, ARMY (BTS‘s fandom) expressed their anger and defended their idol. The hashtag #LEAVEBTSALONE (leave BTS alone) started trending on Twitter. According to BTS fans present at Harry Styles’ concert, SZA received a hug from V. BTS members are extremely friendly, without discriminating against SZA.
Finally, after the controversy, SZA gave an explanation for the previously deleted tweet. The singer shared that she did not mean for things to become so negative. BTS fans continue to demand an apology from the American singer.
