While South Korea lost to Brazil 1-4 in the round of 16 at the 2022 Qatar World Cup and failed to advance to the quarterfinals, some Brazilian soccer fans reportedly crossed the line by mocking K-pop idols such as BTS, Treasure, and Stray Kids on SNS.
Recently, the atrocities of some Brazilian soccer fans have been captured and spread around online communities and SNS in Korea. Only the targets under attack by those posts were different, while the contents were all similar. It is to show off the superiority of Brazilian soccer and mock the Korean artists.
For example, they uploaded posts with a lot of Brazilian flags on the targeted idols’ fan community and ask, “How does it feel to see your country lose?”. Some would photoshop the Brazil national soccer team uniform or the Brazil flag onto photos of these idols and sarcastically say, “Are you crying?”
World star BTS is no exception. A netizen with the Brazilian flag in their account name proudly uploaded a screenshot of them sending an Instagram message full of ridicule to BTS member J-Hope after their team scored four goals in the first half. The BTS members have disabled the DM function anyway, so J-Hope doesn’t see even if they send him messages like this.
It is reported that this is not the first time such a thing has happened. K-pop fans previously complained that such cases had been repeated several times whenever there are big sports competitions such as the Olympics.
When Korean fans who can’t stand this fought back by commenting, “Isn’t this a little too much?” and claiming such action as “racism,” they sarcastically said back, “It’s just a joke, what’s wrong?”
Netizens, angered by the atrocities of some Brazilian soccer fans, criticized, “The fans are dragging down the reputation raised by the Brazilian national soccer team.”
Meanwhile, Brazil will face Croatia in the quarterfinals on Dec 10th.
