Bong Joon-ho & Film Industry Representatives Release Statement Regarding Lee Sun-kyun’s Death Today (Jan 12th)

On the morning of January 12th, the Association of Cultural Artists will release a statement titled “Demands of cultural artists facing the death of the late actor Lee Sun-kyun”.

The press event will be hosted by actor Choi Deok-moon and attended by director Bong Joon-ho, singer-songwriter Yoon Jong-shin, director Lee Won-tae, and actor Kim Eui-sung. In addition, representatives of about 12 associations in the film industry, such as president of the Korean Film Producers Association Choi Jung-hwa, president of the Korea Independent Film Association Go Young-jae, vice president of the Korean Film Producers Association Jung Sang-min, president of the Korea Film Marketing Association Lee Joo-yeon, secretary of the Korean Drama Production Company Association Bae Dae-sik, director Jang Hang-joon from the Korean Film Directors’ Association, etc., will also join the event and add strength to the release of the statement.

Witnessing the death of Lee Sun-kyun, the Association of Cultural Arts agreed that this should not be repeated. They will urge the investigation on Lee Sun-kyun to be completed thoroughly, request the media to refrain from reporting unauthorized articles and delete articles that do not meet the purpose of reporting, and demand the revision of current laws to protect the human rights of cultural artists.

Lee Sun-kyun passed away on December 27th last year while under investigation on drug charges. After Lee Sun-kyun’s death, many people criticized the police and the media for revealing details of the investigation and the actor’s identity before the criminal charges were finalized. 

Earlier on the 3rd, Lee Sun-kyun’s agency HODU&U Entertainment also announced strict legal action against the spread of false information. As such, TV Chosun deleted their post about Lee Sun-kyun’s will after being sued by the actor’s agency.
