BLACKPINK’s Jennie Shone at Cannes Premiere But “The Idol” is Facing Criticism and Her Screen Time is Limited

On the Cannes red carpet, BLACKPINK’s Jennie stood out with her gorgeous appearance.

Critics are sharing mixed reviews for HBO’s drama “The Idol,” which premiered at the 76th Cannes International Film Festival.

Co-produced and starring Canadian pop star The Weeknd, “The Idol” depicts the relationships surrounding pop idols and the music industry. Directed by Sam Levinson of HBO’s “Euphoria,” the main character is played by Lily-Rose Depp, the daughter of Johnny Depp.

Prior to the official screening held at the Cannes Lumière Grand Theatre on May 22nd (local time), it was undoubtedly BLACKPINK’s Jennie who shined the most on the red carpet.

Jennie, who had been going on the BLACKPINK World Tour in Macau until the previous day, showed off her vibrant beauty like a living Barbie doll.

Although Jennie seemed somewhat tired, her 90-degree shoulders and tiny waist stood out as she appeared in a white off-shoulder dress and a black ribbon hairband, capturing the attention of the global press in Cannes.

However, the expectations turned into criticism after the drama screening. Critics who watched the drama first pointed out its explicit content, misogynistic depictions, and male-oriented sexual fantasies. In particular, Lily-Rose Depp received even more criticism for her scenes, including revenge porn and simulated sexual scenes.

Variety reported, “The first two episodes are filled with revenge porn and lewd acts. It’s a messed up male fantasy.” Rolling Stone evaluated it as “a story even more terrible than rumors.” LA Times reported it as “rape fantasy porn.” On Rotten Tomatoes, “The Idol” recorded a freshness rating of only 9%, a very low score.

It was reported that Jennie’s screen time was not significant. She played a friend and backup dancer for Lily-Rose Depp’s character, and appeared for about 5 minutes in episode 1 and 10 minutes in episode 2.

Jennie’s role is not very significant, but local journalists lined up to interview her, but her side remained silent and unresponsive to media inquiries, according to reports.

Coincidentally, on May 22nd, BTS V, who has been rumored to be dating Jennie, also arrived in Cannes. Praise for Jennie’s sparkling beauty is pouring in, but she remains silent about the harsh criticism of her debut drama and dating rumor.
