“Big Mouth” is laughing while “Today’s Webtoon” is crying, a mixed situation among Friday-Saturday dramas
While “Big Mouth” has begun to go viral with its solid development, ratings of “Today’s Webtoon” are declining.
MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama “Big Mouth” (written by Kim Ha-ram/directed by Oh Choong-hwan), which first aired on July 29th, tells the story of Park Chang-ho (played by Lee Jong-seok), a lawyer with 10% winning rate, being caught up in a murder case and forced to become the genius conman “Big Mouse” to survive.
“Big Mouse” started with a 6.2% viewer rating in the first episode and soared to 8.6%, maintaining the good energy of its previous work “Doctor Lawyer.” Above all, it is fun to deduce the identity of the real “Big Mouse” while watching the survival of Lee Jong-seok, who plays Park Chang-ho. The chemistry between Lee Jong-seok and Lim Yoon-ah is also one of the drama’s favorable factors. It is said that Lee Jong-seok’s perspective, which has led many dramas such as “Pinocchio” and “I Can Hear Your Voice” to success, has worked this time as well.
On the other hand, the SBS Friday-Saturday drama “Today’s Webtoon” (scripted by Cho Ye-rang, Lee Jae-eun/directed by Jo Su-won, Kim Young-hwan), which depicts the growth of the new webtoon editor On Ma-eum (Kim Se-jeong), is not in a good situation. It started with a 4.1% viewer rating in the 1st episode and has fallen to 3.1%. It is a disappointing result compared to “Big Mouth,” but the declining ratings of “Today’s Webtoon” is even more painful in that SBS Friday-Saturday dramas have consistently shown high ratings and popularity.
“Today’s Webtoon” deals with a warm and bright growth period, but it has a strong character that teaches life lessons, which is either favored or disliked by the audience. Some say that it was boring because it was calm in the beginning. For Kim Se-jeong, who has bright and positive energy, the character On Ma-eum is customized for her, but it doesn’t feel like a completely new character because she has played a similar role in SBS’ “Business Proposal.” However, it is worth looking for a rebound as only four episodes have been aired and the full-fledged growth of On Ma-eum has just begun.
Since last year, SBS and MBC have started the Friday-Saturday Drama War at the same time, starting with “One the Woman” and “Black Sun,” respectively. With “Big Mouth” catching the early victory, the audience is wondering which drama will have the final victory.
