BABYMONSTER’s “Batter Up” MV Ruined By Yang Hyun-suk?

A YG personnel discussed BABYMONSTER’s “Batter Up” MV amid criticisms

At midnight on November 27, BABYMONSTER’s debut single “Batter Up” and its MV was released, immediately attracting million of views and invoking various discussions.

However, the “Batter Up” MV has drawn a lot of criticisms, especially as Korean netizens pinpoint its similarities to previous MVs of fellow YG artists 2NE1 and BLACKPINK.

In fact, a topic pointing out these similarities, which was titled “YG girl group music video tradition handed down for three generations”, has attracted over 70,000 views and over 200 comments on the Korean forum “theqoo”.

Under the comment section, most people seem to agree, leaving opinions such as “YG is basically copying itself. It’s hard to tell apart their groups nowadays”, “As soon as I saw (the MV), I thought of 2NE1 and BLACKPINK” and “They look like idols from small companies who want to imitate BLACKPINK”.

Following these negative assessments, however, one YG Entertainment employee has blamed Yang Hyun-suk himself for ruining the “Batter Up” MV.

In particular, on Blind – a Korean app for verified employees, one user with a YG account revealed the behind-the-scenes of the BABYMONSTER project.

To specify, when another worker questioned why the new MV is so obsolete and if YG has a visual director, the YG employee answered that they never had a visual director to begin with.

Then, to the question “How come BABYMONSTER’s MV feels extra outdated”, the same employee claimed that the reason is the MV being “Yang Hyun-suk’s work”, adding that “All YG personally also want Yang Hyun-suk to step down (from producing)”.
