“Avatar” character designer released the shocking initial concept design of Neytiri

On March 8th, Joseph C. Pepe, the character designer of the movie “Avatar”, posted the first concept design and illustration of the female lead Neytiri on his SNS account.

Pepe has been unveiling initial concept illustrations of the Na’vi people. He explained, “This is the first image of the Na’vi people that I created after reading James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ script in 2004”. He also showed Jake Sulli’s initial design, saying “We collectively had decided to retain the lower part of the actor or actresses’ faces.”

The initial appearance of Neytiri was quite different from the image we see in the movie. With darker blue skin, different skin patterns, and subtly different facial features and hairstyles, the atmosphere created was subdued and sufficient to evoke a sense of horror.

Pepe explained that it took around one and a half months for Neytiri’s design to be completely finalized and that they made 113 versions with a collaborative process between himself and James Cameron.

He shared, “Neytiri was the first official Na’vi design that I did, so she took the longest”, adding “This series of images documents a little bit of the design process between myself and James Cameron to achieve Neytiri’s final face design. This process included 113 versions to resolve eye size, face shape, stripe pattern design, bioluminescence design, skin color, lip color, ear placement, hair design, length of neck, and head size.”

Meanwhile, James Cameron’s film “Avatar: The Way of Water” was introduced 13 years after the original work “Avatar” in 2009.

Three months after its release in December of last year, it is still receiving much love. Surpassing Cameron’s other work “Titanic”, “Avatar: The Way of Water” reached the third highest-grossing film of all time worldwide.

Continuing its momentum, the “Avatar” series, which is setting various records, is planned to have not only “Avatar 3” in 2024 but also the fourth and fifth movies.
