Biography
Lee Byung-hun stands as a distinguished South Korean actor, singer, and model who has successfully transcended national borders to achieve global recognition within the entertainment industry. His extensive career is marked by an impressive array of roles across both film and television, consistently earning him widespread critical acclaim and solidifying his reputation for remarkable versatility.
Early Career and Korean Breakthroughs
Following his debut, Lee Byung-hun steadily began to capture attention with his roles in the action drama Asphalt Man in 1995 and the romantic film The Harmonium in My Memory in 1999. These early projects provided a platform for him to showcase his burgeoning potential across different genres. His definitive breakthrough, however, arrived in 2000 with his starring role in Park Chan-wook’s critically acclaimed war drama, Joint Security Area. This film, set in the demilitarized zone, proved to be a pivotal moment that firmly established his significant presence in Korean cinema.

Television Dominance
Lee Byung-hun achieved broader national fame and cemented his status as a household name through his leading roles in highly popular Korean television dramas. These include Beautiful Days (2001), All In (2003), and Iris (2009). Both All In and Iris were particularly successful, running for 24 and 20 episodes respectively, further solidifying his widespread recognition across South Korea.

While steadily building a strong film career, Lee Byung-hun consistently returned to leading roles in television dramas, which significantly contributed to his “wider fame”.
Hollywood Ventures and Global Recognition
Lee Byung-hun’s commanding performance as a villain in the “kimchi western” The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008) significantly enhanced his global recognition and effectively paved the way for his Hollywood debut. He successfully transitioned into the American film industry, famously portraying the iconic character Storm Shadow in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) and reprising the role in its sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013).

His Hollywood filmography further expanded to include a co-starring role with Bruce Willis in Red 2 (2013) and his portrayal of the formidable T-1000 in Terminator Genisys (2015). In 2016, he continued to make his mark by starring as the knife-wielding gunslinger Billy Rocks in The Magnificent Seven. His commitment to a Hollywood career was further demonstrated by his signing with the major Hollywood agency United Talent Agency in March 2017 and his subsequent casting in the action film Radiance.
Continued Success and Recent Works
Upon returning to Korea, Lee Byung-hun continued to star in critically and commercially successful films, including the crime thriller Master (2016), the historical epic The Fortress (2017), and the heartwarming comedy-drama Keys to the Heart (2018). His consistent box office appeal was further reaffirmed by the success of Ashfall (2019) and the political drama The Man Standing Next (2020), which further cemented his “brand power as a lead actor”. He also starred in the political thriller Emergency Declaration, which notably premiered out of competition at the prestigious 74th Cannes Film Festival in July 2021. In television, he made a significant return with the tvN series Our Blues (2022). He also played a leading role in the disaster thriller film Concrete Utopia (2023) alongside Park Bo-young and Park Seo-joon.

A significant milestone in his recent career is his recurring role as the enigmatic Front Man in the globally acclaimed Netflix survival series Squid Game (2021), and his continued involvement as a main cast member in seasons 2 and 3 (2021–2025). This role propelled him to a new level of global recognition, even making him the “richest star of Squid Game 2”.
Relationships and Family
Early in his career, Lee Byung-hun was romantically linked with fellow actress Song Hye-kyo in the early 2000s. Their relationship, though kept largely low-key and rarely publicized, lasted approximately fifteen months before their separation in mid-2004.

He later married actress Lee Min-jung on August 10, 2013, in a high-profile ceremony held at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. The couple had a previous brief relationship in 2006 before rekindling their romance in 2012. They welcomed their first child, a son named Lee Joon-hoo, on March 31, 2015. On December 21, 2023, the couple celebrated the birth of their second child, a daughter. At 53 years old, Lee Byung-hun’s joy at having a daughter was widely noted, leading to him being affectionately described as a “daughter fool”.
Controversies/Incidents
Blackmail Scandal (2014)
A year into his marriage, Lee Byung-hun became embroiled in a high-profile blackmail scandal. Singer Dahee of K-pop group Glam and model Lee Ji-yeon attempted to extort 5 billion won (approximately $4 million USD) from him, threatening to release a compromising video. They were arrested after Lee reported the crime to the police. While Lee Ji-yeon claimed the blackmail was an impulsive act following a breakup, Lee’s agency released an official statement asserting that Lee had never met her alone and ceased contact when he sensed ulterior motives, as they had discussed financial difficulties and demanded a house. Both women ultimately received suspended sentences after Lee requested a pardon. His then-pregnant wife, Lee Min-jung, temporarily stayed with her parents during this period but later publicly forgave him.

Civil Lawsuit and Gambling Allegations (2009)
In 2009, an ex-girlfriend, Kwon Mi-yeon, filed a civil lawsuit against him, alleging he tricked her into a sexual relationship with a promise of marriage and caused her mental anguish. She also accused him of being a chronic gambler and sought 100 million won in damages.
Lee’s agency, BH Entertainment, countered that her claims were false and that the lawsuit was retaliatory due to their breakup. Lee subsequently countersued Kwon for defamation and extortion. Lee was ultimately cleared of the illegal gambling charges due to insufficient evidence, and Kwon’s claim for damages was eventually dropped due to her lack of participation in proceedings. This incident also involved TV host Kang Byung-kyu, who was later convicted for blackmail and assault charges related to the dispute.
