Biography

Yoo Jeong-yeon, known mononymously as Jeongyeon, is a South Korean singer and lyricist. She is best known as a lead vocalist of the K-pop girl group TWICE, formed by JYP Entertainment through the survival program Sixteen in 2015. Since debut, she has been recognized for her stable vocals and calm stage presence as part of one of the most successful girl groups in K-pop.

Early Life and Education

Jeongyeon was born Yoo Kyung-wan on November 1, 1996, in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, and later legally changed her name to Yoo Jeong-yeon.

She has two older sisters, including actress Gong Seung-yeon, and grew up in a family connected to the culinary industry; her father worked as a chef who once served former South Korean president Kim Dae-jung.

From a young age, she developed an interest in singing and performing. She auditioned for JYP Entertainment multiple times before successfully joining the company in 2010, where she trained for approximately five years prior to debut.

Career

Pre-Debut and SIXTEEN (2010–2015)

After joining JYP Entertainment in 2010, Jeongyeon trained alongside future TWICE members. She was originally expected to debut in a planned girl group project with trainees including Nayeon, Sana, and Jihyo, but the project was cancelled.

In 2015, she participated in the reality survival show Sixteen, which selected the final lineup of TWICE. In the final episode, she was chosen as one of the nine members.

Debut with TWICE (2015–Present)

Jeongyeon officially debuted with TWICE on October 20, 2015, with the extended play The Story Begins and its title track “Like Ooh-Ahh.” The group quickly rose to prominence and became one of the most influential K-pop girl groups of their generation.

Within TWICE, Jeongyeon serves as a lead vocalist, contributing to the group’s vocal balance and performance style. She has also participated in songwriting for several TWICE tracks.

Between 2016 and 2017, she co-hosted the SBS music program Inkigayo alongside her sister Gong Seung-yeon and actor Kim Min-seok, winning the Newcomer Award at the 2016 SBS Entertainment Awards for her hosting work.

In 2025, Jeongyeon collaborated with fellow TWICE members Jihyo and Chaeyoung on the single “Takedown”, released for the animated film KPop Demon Hunters. The song entered the Billboard Hot 100, marking her first chart appearance as part of a smaller unit.

Health Hiatus

In 2020, Jeongyeon was diagnosed with a herniated disc and underwent surgery shortly before TWICE’s More & More promotions.

She later took temporary breaks from activities due to anxiety and psychological health concerns, eventually returning to group promotions after recovery periods
