Biography

Haechan is a South Korean singer and dancer. He is a member of the South Korean boy band NCT and its sub-units NCT U, NCT 127, and NCT Dream under SM Entertainment. On September 8, 2025, Haechan expanded his musical career with his solo debut, releasing his first studio album Taste.

Early Life and Education

Haechan was born Lee Dong-hyeok on June 6, 2000, in Seoul, South Korea. He lived in Seoul until the age of seven, after which his family relocated to Jeju Island, where he spent five years of his childhood before returning to Seoul. 

He attended the School of Performing Arts Seoul, a well-known arts high school that many K-pop idols have graduated from, where he focused on performance and vocal training. Haechan is the oldest of four siblings.

Career

SM Rookies and Early Training (2013–2015)

In 2013, Haechan joined SM Entertainment after passing the company’s Saturday Open Auditions. During his trainee years he was introduced as a member of SM Rookies on July 17, 2014, a pre-debut team designed to cultivate future SM artists. As part of SM Rookies, he appeared in various SM Entertainment content, including the reality television series EXO 90:2014 and the Korean version of The Mickey Mouse Club.

Debut with NCT (2016–Present)

On July 2, 2016, SM Entertainment announced that Haechan would debut as a member of NCT 127, the Seoul-based sub-unit of NCT, and he made his official debut on July 7, 2016, with the release of the title track Fire Truck. Shortly after, he was also included in NCT Dream, which debuted on August 25, 2016, with the single Chewing Gum. These debuts marked Haechan as one of the earliest members of NCT’s active sub-units.

In his career with NCT, Haechan has participated in group albums, world tours, and multiple NCT projects, including NCT 2020: Resonance Pt. 1 & Pt. 2 and ongoing NCT releases. He has performed a wide range of musical styles, demonstrating versatility as both a vocalist and dancer throughout NCT’s evolving discography.

Solo

After nine years as a group member, Haechan officially launched his solo music career on September 8, 2025 with his studio album Taste, showcasing his personal artistic style and growth beyond group activities. This solo debut highlights his distinct vocal color and established popularity within the global K-pop scene.
