Amid ‘fake acting’ remarks controversy, Son Seok Gu will appear in public for the first time today (July 18th)

Actor Son Seok Gu made his first public appearance after the controversy over his ‘fake acting’ remarks broke out.

Son Seok Gu will attend the press conference for Netflix’s original series “D.P. Season 2” held at Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas in Gangnam, Seoul today (July 18th). Apart from Son Seok Gu, Jung Hae In, Koo Kyo Hwan, Kim Sung Kyun, Ji Jin Hee, Kim Ji Hyun, and director Han Jun Hee also join the event.

“D.P. 2” continues the story of D.P. (Deserter Pursuit) team members Jun Ho (Jung Hae In) and Ho Yeol (Koo Kyo Hwan) facing the unchanging reality and absurdity in the military. Following Season 1, Son Seok Gu will return as Lim Ji Sub through Season 2, which will premiere on July 28th.

Prior to the drama release, the actors and the director will gather at the press conference to introduce their work. This event is drawing even more attention as it is Son Seok Gu’s first official appearance after the controversy over his ‘fake acting’ remarks arose.

Son Seok Gu is currently participating in the theater play “Army on the Tree” held at the LG Arts Center. At the press release for the play, the actor said, “In the script, it said ‘whispering love’, but in that case, they should have given us microphones. Being asked to not whisper for real on the stage made me feel like I was doing fake acting. That’s why I quit theater and turned to media acting, like dramas and movies”, adding, “When I came back to the stage, I wanted to experiment and see whether my acting style could work in theater.”

Later, veteran actor Nam Myung Ryul mentioned Son Seok Gu’s remarks and criticized, “I can only laugh. That arrogance”. He continued, “Seriously, even if you have to whisper with raw acting, you should think about acting in a way that allows 350 audiences to hear it well. If you didn’t have that concern when doing theater performances, then you should take back the word that you were going to do theater acting only”, adding “There are several actors who can fill 350 seats of the theater even when they whisper lines. If all acting is about portraying fictional characters, then it is absurd to define what real acting is”.

As his criticism spread and led to a controversy, Nam Myung Ryul deleted his post. He posted, “Some criticize it as the words of an old man who can’t keep up with the times. However, it’s a story about the essence that will continue from Shakespeare’s era, now to the future. You guys!”, then turned off the comment function on his SNS.

Son Seok Gu has not expressed his position regarding the controversy. Therefore, attention is focused on whether he will address the issue at “D.P. 2” press conference.
