“Alienoid” Kim Tae-ri shares, “Acting is all a lie anyway. I just focused on the true self of my character”

Kim Tae-ri shared her thoughts on the new movie “Alieonoid” and her own stories in a recent interview.

Kim Tae-ri is an actress with a high success rate. Movies “The Handmaiden” (directed by Park Chan-wook), “1987: When the Day Comes” (directed by Jang Jun-hwan), “Little Forest” (directed by Lim Soon-rye), Netlfix’s movie “Space Sweepers”, tvN’s dramas “Mr. Sunshine” and “Twenty-five, Twenty-one” are some of her representative works. She recently joined hands with director Choi Dong-hoon and will present the movie “Alienoid”. Kim Tae-ri appeared at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul on July 19th for an interview about the new movie.

When asked why she decided to star in “Alienoid”, Kim Tae-ri answered without hesitation, “Choi Dong-hoon. It’s because of these three letters”. She continued to pour out her passionate feelings for “Alienoid” during the 1 hour of the interview.

“Alienoid” tells the story that unfolds as the gates of time open between the Goryeo Dynasty and the present. Kim Tae-ri appears as Lee Ahn, a woman living in the late Goryeo Dynasty. This is a mysterious character who is named “thunder shooter” because she has amazing martial art skills and always carries a pistol. This unique character in a unique movie attracted the attention of Kim Tae-ri. She shared, “First of all, I had great faith in the director. I didn’t worry about the complicated genre since I like challenging new things. Whether it would be successful or not, I think it’s meaningful that I got try this work for the first time.”

The filming of “Alienoid” took a long time of 387 days and Kim Tae-ri also changed and grew during that time. Regarding her character Lee Ahn, she said, “I have an exceptionally bad memory so when I’m stressed out, I tend to avoid the fact by sleeping”. She continued, “Lee Ahn does not avoid anything. If she thinks something is right, she will run forward recklessly. She’s very different from me at this point”, praising her character. When asked how she approached a character that is opposite from her real personality, Kim Tae-ri mentioned ‘acting’.

I think acting is all a lie. Actors are people who tell you the most realistic lies. That’s why I don’t worry much. It’s a lie anyway, so I just have to choose one, whether to act with the similarities compared to my personality or use my imagination as much as possible. Just don’t give up in the middle of the process. I focused on the true self of my character.”

Revealing that working with director Choi Dong-hoon gave her many lessons, Kim Tae-ri said, “I’m not sure I’ve accomplished anything. However, I was able to learn various expressions from the director’s working method”. She added, “The director said ‘I want Lee Ahn to look cool’, but I wanted to stop being cool. All the characters I’ve played so far were so cool. I said I wanted my character to be more humane and the director agreed with my suggestion.”

Kim Tae-ri challenged action acting through this movie. To prepare for Lee Ahn, she took lessons at action school and even learned gymnastics. The shooting scene left a deep impression on the audience. Kim Tae-ri commented, “I gathered all the energy from the universe to act that scene. Since I learned how to use my strength in ‘Alienoid’, I want to do better in my next work”.

Kim Tae-ri said that she felt more relaxed after finishing “Alienoid”, saying “I felt that I was receiving a lot of love. Recognizing that I am such a valuable person, my attitude changed and I became more relaxed”. Revealing that she also took the courage to look back on her past, the actress shared, “The past is just the past, I’m a different person now. I’m not afraid to reveal who I am. Kim Tae-ri will change even more in the future. I’m really looking forward to myself in the future. Haha.”
