“Alchemy of Souls” is suspected of plagiarising a Chinese drama after two episodes, “Similar character settings + fight scenes”
Many are arguing that the new drama “Alchemy of Souls” is similar to the Chinese drama “Ever Night.”
Recently, suspicions have been raised on various online communities that some of the character settings and broadcasting scenes of Hong Sisters’ new tvN series “Alchemy of Souls” and Chinese drama “Ever Night” are similar.
“Alchemy of Souls” is a fantasy romance drama in which the main characters whose fate is twisted due to soul-changing alchemy overcome the crisis and grow, and it is broadcast at 9:10 p.m. every weekend. Actors Lee Jae-wook, Jung So-min, Hwang Min-hyun, and Yoo Joon-sang are performing enthusiastically in the drama.
While the work is performing quite well after the first two episodes, one netizen mentioned the character settings of “Alchemy of Souls” and “Ever Night” and claimed that there are many similarities between those two series.
What the netizen claimed was that the relationship between the male and female main characters was set up as the owner and the maid in both dramas. They said, “The female protagonist is actually the daughter of the Ming Dynasty and a fairy, so she later appears as a different person. The male protagonist also fights with the enemy who killed his parents,” they said.
In addition, the netizen added, “At first, the male protagonist’s spirit was blocked, so he was unable to perform, and there is a place called Seowon that fosters the trainees, and those details are similar in both dramas.”
Many netizens claimed that Nak-soo (played by Ko Yoon-jung) and Park Jin (played by Yoo Joon-sang)’s duel on ice in the “Alchemy of Souls” episode aired on the 18th is also similar to a scene in the Chinese drama “Ever Night.” In this scene, Nak-soo and Park Jin continue the fight using a bow and a knife.
In “Ever Night,” there was an opinion that this part was also similar because the two main characters also used bows on the ice lake to fight 1:1 battles.
Some agreed with the netizens’ claim that “the character settings and the atmosphere of the scene are all similar,” but some netizens responded, “The plagiarism suspicion regarding the duel scene seems a little far-fetched,” and “I don’t know because it’s cliché-level.”
Meanwhile, Hong Sisters, who wrote “Alchemy of Souls,” has been embroiled in plagiarism multiple times in works such as “The Greatest Love,” “Master’s Sun,” and “Hotel Del Luna.”
