AI Covers Shock Celebrities Again, Urging The Implementation Of AI-Related Copyrights Issues Prevention

The controversy over the excessive use of AI continues as various covers of BIBI’s “Bam Yang Gang” spread widely online

On YouTube, cover videos of “Bam Yang Gang” with AI voices of IU, Park Myung-soo, Baek Ye-rin, etc. have recently attracted hundreds of thousands of views. Those videos were made by the voices of celebrities created by AI technology, not the celebrities’ real voices. However, AI voices sounded so similar to the real ones that many singers have expressed discomfort and complained about it.

As AI technology becomes more advanced, more AI cover videos are pouring out and gaining a lot of views. People can now create AI cover songs easily using AI platforms, websites, or even mobile phone apps.

In a video on her YouTube channel, Jang Yoon-jung listened to AI cover songs and commented, “The situation is a bit serious now. I’m getting goosebumps”, adding “I thought AI wouldn’t work when it comes to singing. If it turns out to be like this, why would singers have to record songs? You can just turn on AI with your voice to make the song and sell it. Don’t you need to pay for the technology only?”

Park Myung-soo was also taken aback when he listened to “Bam Yang Gang” AI cover with his voice, which recently created a hot topic. He said, “How can it sound exactly the same as my voice?”, adding “I didn’t know that it would be this similar. What should other celebrities do now?”, expressing his concerns.

According to the current laws, one can be punished if they do not obtain permission from the owner of the original voice to create AI cover songs or similar content. The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has emphasized the need for permission to use AI cover songs as there’s a possibility of an infringement of copyright.

Many critics also pointed out that the government should quickly establish laws along with the rapid advancement of AI. In December last year, the EU was the first to pass a bill that mandates watermarks on AI-generated content.

In Korea, a law about mandatory requirements for the use of AI to prevent side effects of AI content has been proposed but it has not yet passed through the National Assembly. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korea CopyrightComission plan to announce policies on AI and copyright issues later this year after collecting public opinions.

Meanwhile, Kakao announced on the 13th that they have introduced a watermark for Karlo, Kakao Brain’s image-generating model, to ensure the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). This is aimed at preventing the distribution of malicious deepfakes and other manipulated information.
