After scamming NCT fans for 2 years, a man was sentenced to prison

After scamming fans of boy group NCT out of tens of million Korean won, a man received a prison sentence.

For around 1 year since September 2021, a man (hereinafter referred to as “A”), often lists photocards of boy group NCT for sale. However, after receiving 10.28 million Korean won (approx. 7,800 USD) from 153 fans who wanted to purchase the photocards, A never sent them anything.

Later on in June 2022, A used the same method and successfully scammed an additional 3.61 million Korean won (approx. 2,700 USD) from 46 new victims. Within the same year, he also pretended to sell NewJeans albums and earned over 1 million won from unsuspecting fans.

In the end, A was arrested on charges of fraud, having scammed 47 million Korean won (approx 36,000 USD) out of a total of 758 people, most of whom are Kpop fans, with similar methods.

A has since been sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison and 3 years in probation.

On the other hand, “photocard scam”, where fans spend hefty money to purchase their favorite photocards yet never receive any, is a popular scam method within the Kpop community.
