Karina, leader of K-pop girl group aespa, has become one of the most prominent idols of Gen 4, celebrated for both her musical achievements and striking visuals. Over five years, hits like Next Level, Drama, Supernova, and Whiplash helped cement her position at the top of the industry.
Beyond music, Karina’s beauty is often described as “better than AI,” earning her a spot among the “visual kings and queens” of Gen 4 alongside Jang Wonyoung, Yuna (ITZY), and Sullyoon (NMIXX). However, her appearance has also been the subject of ongoing debate.
Recently, a user on X (formerly Twitter) shared early debut photos of Karina from aespa’s Black Mamba MV. In these images, Karina’s face looks different: slightly rounder, eyes larger, and facial lines less refined compared to her current, highly stylized appearance. The post quickly gained traction, racking up nearly 9 million views, reigniting speculation about possible cosmetic enhancements.
Some netizens argue Karina may have undergone minor procedures over time to enhance her natural beauty rather than a complete “AI-like overhaul.” Others question the increasing pressure on idols to meet unrealistic visual standards, noting that even top idols like Karina face scrutiny over every detail of their appearance.
Meanwhile, Karina’s solo release, Good Stuff, has performed moderately in streaming numbers but initially struggled on Korean charts. As of November 18, it had not entered any domestic charts. On November 19, the song showed improvement, reaching #112 on Melon and #215 on Genie. Comparatively, NingNing’s solo track Ketchup And Lemonade topped #1 on Bugs and #16 on Melon, temporarily outperforming Karina.
Despite past successes with Up, which made Karina the first Gen 4 soloist to dominate real-time Korean charts, Good Stuff marks a modest setback in her solo career.
