Additional cast to be announced after “Squid Game 2” received global criticism

As global criticism poured out regarding the casting of major roles in “Squid Game” season 2, Netflix said that additional cast will be announced soon.

On June 17th, Netflix unveiled the main cast lineup for the original series “Squid Game” season 2 (hereinafter referred to as “Squid Game 2”) at the global fan event Tudum in Sao Paulo, Brazil . Aside from actors Lee Jung Jae, Lee Byung Hun, Wi Ha Joon and Gong Yoo, who appeared in season 1, Im Si Wan, Kang Ha Neul, Park Sung Hoon and Yang Dong Geun will join to lead season 2.

However, in the main cast lineup revealed this time, there was not even one female character. Accordingly, Korean and foreign online communities asked and criticized whether there were any actresses.

In Korea, there are not a few responses saying, “It seems like a common Korean movie.” The unique charm of season 1, which included various characters such as women, foreign workers and the elderly, became weak. In overseas, where casting considering various races and genders is becoming common, voices containing such regret are growing day by day.

As the controversy intensified, Netflix said through a media report on June 20th, “Additional cast will be announced soon.” However, since they are not included in the 8 main roles, it seems difficult to expect that they will have decent screen time.

Some defended, “Female characters may not have been revealed in advance because they play the role of a joker or cheat key.”

However, there are louder voices saying, “It doesn’t fit the world trend that no one enters the main cast line up except for the cheat key“, “Even if all 8 were female characters, you guys would have criticized the same. The balance of the characters itself lowers expectations“…

People around the world are already paying attention to what kind of ripple effect “Squid Game 2”, which has been controversial from the start, will show.
