A famous actress has been discussing how she was heavily abused by her mother as a child.
Ariel Winter, who portrayed Alex Dunphy from Season 1 to the final Season 11 of “Modern Family”, from the ages of 11 to 22, has been openly speaking about her extremely uncomfortable relationship with her mother, Crystal Workman, and her experience of prolonged child abuse.
In 2012, Winter’s mother was charged with allegations of physical and emotional abuse towards Ariel Winter, who was 14 years old at the time. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, during the filming of “Modern Family”, Winter was allegedly subjected to strict diets, forcing the production staff to sneak her food.
Furthermore, Ariel Winter’s mother was accused of pushing and hitting her, as well as dressing her in age-inappropriate clothing and using inappropriate nicknames, amounting to harassment. It was revealed that Ariel Winter relied on her co-star Sarah Hyland, who played her on-screen older sister, for support.
However, Ariel Winter’s mother strongly denied the abuse allegations. Winter’s older sister, Shanelle Gray (also known as Shanelle Workman), who was 34 years old at the time, became Ariel Winter’s legal guardian and maintained that position until Ariel Winter reached adulthood three years later.
Celebrating the emancipation achieved after a fierce legal battle, Ariel expressed gratitude to the beloved people who helped her obtain this wonderful opportunity in her life through social networking services. She also mentioned how lucky she was to have various loving people who helped her during the process, and thanked Shanelle and her father for their special support, saying that she couldn’t have overcome it without them.
In 2017, Ariel Winter also revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about the abuse she suffered from her mother, saying that since she started acting, food became “very, very restricted”, while her education was neglected.
The actress also recalled that her mother constantly dressed her in sexualized outfits such as the smallest mini-skirts, low-cut items, and the shortest dresses, causing people to mistake her for 24 at the age of 12.
“If there was going to be a nude scene when I was that age, my mother would have a thousand percent said yes”, the actress added.
On the other hand, Ariel Winter is currently appearing on the Fox reality series “Stars on Mars”.
