A look back at past winners of Daesang at the APAN Star Awards: Song Joong Ki made an unexpected win for the second time its history 

These winners bagged home the highest award thanks to their undisputable performance of the year. 

With its 8 years of taking place, “APAN Star Awards”, an award by the Korean Entertainment Management Association, is thriving and taking a more central  place as a prestigious award of the Korean entertainment scene. The award itself gained reputation and fairness from the list of winners of the Grand Prize (Daesang) throughout the history of the award ceremony. 

2012: Son Hyun Joo (The Chaser) 

While “The Chaser” was not anticipated before its air due to the lack of major stars, the television series soon became a sensation across Korea with the highest rating of 25.1%. The ‘soul’ of the series was Son Hyun Joo, who also earned what he deserved for his wonderful performance in the series. 

Apart from the “Grand Prize” of APAN Star Awards, Son Hyun Joo also bagged home the same award of high order at K-Drama Star Awards and SBS Drama Awards and the “Best Actor” award at the Baeksang Arts Awards 2013.

2013: Song Hye Kyo (That Winter the Wind Blows) 

 The 1981-born actress won her Daesang at the 2013 APAN Star Awards thanks emotional role in the drama “That Winter the Wind Blows”. 

That was one of the actress’ top performances in her career for the perfect combination between beauty and skills of the actress. Song Hye Kyo was also nominated for the “Grand Prize” at the “Korean Drama Awards” and “Best Actress” at the “Baeksang Arts Awards” of the same year. 

2014: Jo In Sung (It’s Okay That’s Love) 

Song Hye Kyo’s co-star in “That Winter the Wind Blows”, Jo In Sung, also happened to be the winner of the “Grand Prize” in the following year. This total victory came from his impressive performance in “It’s Okay That’s Love”. 

That was also the third time in a row the star of an SBS show won this award in the APAN Star Awards. Following the tradition, Jo In Sung was also a nominee for “Best Actor” at the 2015 Baeksang Arts Awards. 

2015: Kim Soo Hyun (The Producers) 

While not being his best performance, “The Producers” was the drama that brought the most awards to the actor. At 27, Kim Soo Hyun made a hattrick of “Daesang” at three award shows: Korean Drama Awards, KBS Drama Awards and APAN Star Awards. 

Despite the glorious victory, the audiences were not really satisfied with his consecutive wins based on his performance on the television series. 

2016: Song Joong Ki (Descendants Of The Sun)

The impact “Descendant Of The Sun” had on the year of its release made it easier to guess which drama and its actors would win the Grand Prize of that year. Expectedly, Song Joong Ki was chosen as the winner of “Daesang” at the APAN Star Awards, becoming his second “Grand Prize” thanks to this phenomenal drama. 

2018: Lee Byung Hun (Mr. Sunshine) 

Lee Byung Hun’s performance in “Mr. Sunshine” rightly earned for the actor the “Grand Prize” of the 2018 APAN Star Awards after a hiatus from appearing in dramas. 

The actor also won a total of three major awards thanks to his role in “Mr. Sunshine”, the two other being the “Daesang” at the Asian Artist Awards and “Best Actor” at the Baeksang Arts Awards 2019. Netizens believed and often compared this win streak to be one of the two most deserving wins in the history of APAN Star Awards, beside Son Hyun Joo’s in 2012. 

2020: Hyun Bin (Crash Landing On You)

Hyun Bin was the 7th winner of the “Grand Prize” of the APAN Star Awards owing to his strong performance in “Crash Landing On You”. 

He was also a nominee of “Best Actor” at the 2020 Baeksang Arts Awards. Hyun Bin was able to bag home two “Grand Prizes”, all thanks to his two most famous television roles. 

2022: Song Joong Ki (Vincenzo) 

While Kim So Yeon and Park Eun Bin are tough contenders for this year’s “Grand Prize” of APAN Star Awards, Song Joong Ki made yet another successful and unexpected win of the award with “Vincenzo” and became the first star to be awarded two “Daesangs” in the history of the award show.
