A hit Korean movie that earned nearly 50 million USD from overseas remakes

From achieving millions of domestic audiences, this movie also records huge popularity outside of Korea. 

The Indonesian remake of “Miracle in Cell No.7” has reportedly ranked 3rd and 5th in box office among movies released in 2022, and in history, respectively.

As the Indonesian version of “Miracle in Cell No.7” achieved major success by attracting audiences that reached about 10 times the break-even point, the recorded sales were a whopping $13.51 million (approximately 19.2 billion won).

In addition, the remake of “Miracle in Cell No.7” in Turkey in 2019 also gained 5.36 million viewers and recorded sales of more than 20.4 billion won, ranking 9th in the box office of all time, and achieved sales of more than 11 billion won in the Philippines.

“Miracle in Cell No. 7”, which earned a total of over 50.6 billion won (around 47 million USD) in global revenue from overseas remake, was adapted/produced based on a true story that occurred in 1972.

The acting of Ryu Seung Ryong and other actors received immense acclaim. In addition, child actress Kal So Won was greatly loved for her charms, and earned the nickname of “the nation’s niece”.

According to the media, Kal So Won actually was the worst performer at the time she auditioned. However, since her acting was innocent and child-like, director Lee Hwang Hwan, who was in charge of the film, selected her for the cast.
