“Should we cancel all music performances…” A famous musician expressed his regret over the current situation
Singer and composer Jung Won Young expressed his opinion after seeing music performances being canceled one after another in condolences for the “Itaewon disaster.”
Jung Won Young wrote on his Instagram on Nov 1st, “Should we cancel all music performances?” He expressed his regret over the current situation, writing, “Is there any consolation and condolence as much as music?”
Earlier, the government has announced a national mourning period until Nov 5th to commemorate the Halloween disaster in Itaewon, and all release of concerts and albums at the public institution and private level were canceled.
In response, Jung Won Young insisted that not performing unconditionally does not equal mourning. Currently, some netizens support and sympathize with his remarks.
Netizens left comments on Jung Won Young’s Instagram, saying, “Right now is when we need music,” “I think I know what I can do now,” “It’s really unfortunate that people are taking these measures because they are afraid of one view of art and music,” and “I suddenly got emotional.”
Ahead of Halloween Day on Oct 29th, a large-scale crush accident occurred as a large crowd flocked to Itaewon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul.
According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on Nov 1st, as of 11 a.m., the number of deaths was 156 , 29 seriously injured, and 122 lightly injured.
Jung Won Young made his debut as a member of the band “Sham” in 1980 and formed the band “Giggs” in 1999.
Currently, he is a full-time professor of practical music at Howon University.
