The July 28 episode of SBS Plus’ Time Tracker: Sherlock will explore the theme of “Joseon Tongsinsa, the Original Global Hallyu Stars,” examining the popularity of the Joseon diplomatic missions in Japan and comparing their fan culture to that of today’s Korean Wave celebrities.

Lee Hong Ki will appear as a special guest alongside historian Shin Byung Joo and art critic Ahn Hyun Jung. Together, they will discuss the scale and prestige of the Joseon Tongsinsa missions, as well as the reasons behind their explosive popularity in Japan. After watching footage of their lavish performances and high-level entertainment, Bong Tae Gyu remarked, “No wonder the Japanese followed them everywhere.”

The episode also highlights the overwhelming enthusiasm of Japanese fans toward the Joseon Tongsinsa. Watching crowds of fans gathering by boat in what was described as a “crazy fan meeting on the sea,” Lee Hong Ki expressed his amazement, saying, “That’s on another level.” The program will also introduce stories about the obsessive devotion shown by fans toward the most popular members of the delegation.

During the discussion, Lee Hong Ki candidly shared his own experiences with sasaeng fans. Hearing that members of the Joseon Tongsinsa were unable to properly rest even after completing their official duties because of persistent admirers, he said he could relate. Drawing from his own experiences, he explained how he has handled obsessive fans over the years, revealing, “There were times when I gave them a proper scolding before sending them away,” prompting laughter in the studio.

The program will also explore the grueling travel schedule endured by the Joseon Tongsinsa. After hearing about their exhausting itinerary, Jang Hang Joon commented, “Even if it guaranteed success, I don’t think I could do it,” with the rest of the cast expressing sympathy for the hardships the delegation faced.

Lee Hong Ki’s stories about dealing with sasaeng fans, along with the hidden history of the Joseon Tongsinsa the original global Hallyu stars will air on Time Tracker: Sherlock on SBS Plus at 10:30 p.m. on July 28.

Lee Hong Ki debuted in 2007 as a member of F.T. Island with the group’s first album, Cheerful Sensibility. He gained widespread popularity through hit songs such as “Love Sick,” “Severely,” and “Memory.” In addition to his music career, he has appeared in dramas including You’re Beautiful, Bride of the Century, and Modern Farmer. He is also scheduled to meet fans at the F.T. Island with Symphony concert on August 15.
