During the performance, the members playfully changed the lyric “ping-pong” to “football,” adding a special World Cup touch to the song. In particular, Jungkook once again performed on the World Cup stage after appearing at the opening ceremony of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, marking another memorable moment for global football fans.
However, after videos of BTS’ performance spread online, some Japanese netizens posted negative reactions. They made unfounded claims such as, “What does South Korea have to do with the host countries?”, “The Korean government paid to have BTS perform,” “FIFA must have close ties with HYBE,” and “The world doesn’t even know BTS.”
In contrast, many international fans praised the performance, commenting that it was “perfect for the World Cup atmosphere,” that “Jungkook returning to the World Cup stage was meaningful,” and that “the show made the celebration even more exciting,” highlighting the stark difference in public reactions.
Meanwhile, BTS served as one of the co-headliners of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final halftime show alongside global pop icons including Madonna, Shakira, and Justin Bieber, delivering a historic performance at the event held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19 (local time).
