For more than two decades, Song Hye Kyo has been synonymous with elegant, romantic heroines and has long been regarded as one of South Korea’s most beloved actresses. However, few fans remember that she once took the biggest risk of her career by starring in a controversial Hollywood psychological thriller filled with mature themes.

That film was Fetish, an English-language production that featured Song Hye Kyo’s boldest performance to date. Due to its explicit content, the film received an adults-only rating and never secured a commercial theatrical release in South Korea.

When Song Hye Kyo accepted the role in 2008, she was looking to expand beyond the romantic television dramas that had made her a household name across Asia. The actress had openly expressed her desire to challenge herself with more unconventional characters while exploring opportunities in Hollywood.

In Fetish, she portrayed Sook Hee, a Korean woman possessing shamanic spiritual powers. Seeking a better life, Sook Hee enters an arranged marriage with an American man named Peter and moves to the United States. After settling into her new life, she becomes entangled with neighboring couple John and Julie, using her supernatural abilities to manipulate those around her as their seemingly perfect marriage begins to unravel.

The role marked a dramatic departure from Song Hye Kyo’s signature image. Instead of portraying a gentle and innocent heroine, she appeared with dark makeup, a cold demeanor, and an ambitious, mysterious personality. More notably, Fetish featured the actress’s first intimate scenes on screen, including romantic sequences with co-star Arno Frisch as well as a same-sex scene with actress Athena Currey. To this day, the film remains the most daring performance of Song Hye Kyo’s acting career.

Because of its mature themes, sexual content, and adult dialogue, the Korea Media Rating Board classified Fetish as an adults-only (18+) film. Despite receiving the rating, the movie never received a commercial theatrical release in South Korea. Instead, it was screened primarily at international film festivals, including:

  • Busan International Film Festival
  • Edinburgh International Film Festival
  • San Francisco Asian American International Film Festival

Although many expected the project to become Song Hye Kyo’s breakthrough into Hollywood, the film ultimately received mixed reviews from critics and generated little commercial attention. Many audiences continued to associate the actress with romantic melodramas rather than darker, psychologically complex characters.

Even before Fetish, Song Hye Kyo had already begun experimenting with more mature roles. In the 2007 historical film Hwang Jin Yi, she portrayed the legendary Joseon courtesan and briefly appeared with her bare shoulders exposed in one scene something considered notably bold for her image at the time. The film was intended to showcase a different side of the actress and distinguish itself from the successful television adaptation starring Ha Ji Won. However, it failed to achieve the critical or commercial success many had anticipated.

Although Fetish did not become the turning point Song Hye Kyo had hoped for, she never abandoned her desire to reinvent herself. Over the following years, she gradually took on increasingly diverse roles before finally achieving a career-defining transformation through Netflix’s revenge drama The Glory (2022–2023). Her powerful performance earned widespread acclaim and won her the Best Actress award at the Baeksang Arts Awards, proving she could successfully move beyond the “romance queen” image that had defined much of her career. She continued that evolution in 2025 with the supernatural thriller Dark Nuns, further embracing psychologically complex and emotionally intense characters.

Song Hye Kyo’s next highly anticipated project is Netflix’s original series Tantara, which completed filming in early 2026 and is scheduled for release in Q4 2026. Set within South Korea’s entertainment industry from the 1960s through the 1980s, the drama follows ambitious individuals chasing success amid fierce competition and social change.

Song Hye Kyo stars as Min Ja, a young woman who grows up in poverty but dreams of becoming a singer. Alongside her is Dong Gu, portrayed by Gong Yoo, her childhood friend who enters the entertainment world with her as they navigate personal hardships and industry struggles together. The series also reunites Song Hye Kyo with acclaimed screenwriter Noh Hee Kyung for the first time since Worlds Within (2008) and That Winter, the Wind Blows (2013).

Featuring a star-studded cast that includes Lee Hanee, Cha Seung Won, and Kim Seol Hyun, Tantara is already regarded as one of Netflix’s biggest Korean drama releases of 2026.
