Currently regarded as one of the most sought-after stars of his generation, Zhang Linghe has maintained an incredibly packed schedule with projects lined up almost every month. While he is known for his flawless appearance and composed image, the actor recently admitted that the reality behind the scenes is far from glamorous.
Appearing on the variety show Our Dormitories, Zhang Linghe candidly spoke about his deteriorating health for the first time. He confessed that although he often feels completely exhausted by his nonstop workload, he rarely allows himself to take extended breaks. Instead, seeing too much free time on his schedule only triggers anxiety, irritability, and fears that he will be forgotten by the entertainment industry.
“I used to think resting would make me feel better. But I realized that whenever I stop working, I become anxious instead. Now I’m trying to learn how to rest in moderation, but I still can’t let myself stay idle for too long,” he shared.

His honest confession reflects the intense pressure many young celebrities face at the peak of their careers. With opportunities constantly coming and going, many stars become afraid of slowing down, even as their physical and mental well-being continues to decline.
Beyond anxiety, Zhang Linghe also revealed that he has suffered from chronic insomnia for years. Whenever an important filming schedule or work commitment awaits him the next day, he finds himself unable to sleep. Despite feeling physically drained, his mind remains so tense that he often lies awake for hours before finally falling asleep.
The prolonged lack of rest has gradually taken a toll on his body. Zhang explained that his immune system has weakened significantly, and he has even developed multiple food allergies. To cope with demanding filming schedules and maintain his energy, he formed the habit of drinking extremely strong Americanos on an empty stomach. Each cup reportedly contains three to four shots of espresso far more caffeine than most people would normally consume. On particularly busy days involving long shoots or constant travel, he sometimes drinks two cups just to stay awake.

While the coffee initially helped him stay alert and focused, Zhang said his body eventually began showing warning signs. He has recently experienced frequent heart palpitations, rapid heartbeat, discomfort, and a constant feeling of physical tension.
After undergoing medical examinations, doctors instructed him to stop drinking coffee as soon as possible. The actor admitted that hearing the advice came as a huge shock.
“I was honestly devastated when my doctor told me I had to quit coffee,” Zhang Linghe said. Although he understands that giving up caffeine is necessary for his health, he acknowledged that breaking the habit has been extremely difficult because he has relied on coffee for such a long time. Rather than quitting overnight, he is now gradually reducing his daily intake in hopes that his body can slowly adjust.

His candid remarks quickly spread across Chinese social media, where many fans expressed concern. Countless netizens were surprised to learn that the actor, who always appears confident and healthy, has actually been struggling with insomnia, anxiety, and caffeine dependence. Many also pointed out that his experience reflects the hidden cost of fame, where maintaining a successful career often comes at the expense of personal well-being. Fans hope the actor will prioritize his health, cut back on caffeine, and find a healthier balance between work and rest.
Born in Jiangsu, China, in 1997, Zhang Linghe is widely recognized for his handsome appearance, elegant image, and suitability for historical dramas. He is considered one of the leading actors of China’s new generation.
After making his acting debut in 2019, he quickly gained attention thanks to his striking visuals and impressive height. His popularity skyrocketed through hit costume dramas including Love Between Fairy and Devil, My Journey to You, and Story of Kunning Palace, establishing him as one of the industry’s most promising young stars.

However, his career also faced a major setback in April 2026 following widespread controversy over his role in Pursuit of Jade. His heavily made-up appearance as a battlefield general earned him the mocking nickname “foundation makeup general” and sparked criticism from both audiences and regulators. China’s National Radio and Television Administration reportedly held an emergency meeting regarding the controversy and was said to have placed his future projects—particularly historical dramas under closer review to prevent similar disputes.
The controversy dealt a significant blow to Zhang Linghe’s rapidly rising career. Reports suggested that the increased scrutiny could affect his chances of securing future leading roles.
Adding to the pressure, several major Chinese state media outlets, including Global Times, Xinhua News Agency, China News Service, People’s Daily, and other official publications, publicly criticized the performance, arguing that the controversial portrayal had negatively impacted the historical drama industry.
