Cristiano Ronaldo has addressed the growing speculation surrounding his international future after comments made by his sister fueled rumors that the 2026 FIFA World Cup could be his final tournament with Portugal.
The discussion began after Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, described this World Cup as what could be her brother’s “last dance” on football’s biggest stage. She also said it would be incredibly difficult to find another player capable of matching everything Ronaldo has achieved throughout his career. Her remarks immediately sparked widespread debate over whether the Portuguese captain plans to retire from international football once the tournament concludes.
Speaking to Portuguese broadcaster Sport TV, Ronaldo remained calm and refused to reveal any specific plans regarding his future with the national team.

“The future of Cristiano isn’t important right now,” he said. “I’ll talk about it later. After we win or lose, I’ll sit down with my family, and then I’ll make the best decision. I no longer make decisions in the heat of the moment. Everything is done calmly now. What’s most important is enjoying today.”
For the moment, the Portugal captain is fully focused on his country’s World Cup campaign rather than allowing questions about retirement to become a distraction.
Following Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Croatia, Roberto Martínez’s side has booked a place in the Round of 16, where they will face Spain on July 7 in one of the tournament’s most highly anticipated knockout matches.
