Ji Chang Wook is now one of South Korea’s most beloved actors, known for his successful career, handsome looks, and global popularity. However, long before becoming a Hallyu superstar, he endured a difficult childhood filled with financial hardship, the loss of his father, and countless part-time jobs to help support his family.
Born on July 5, 1987, in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, Ji Chang Wook dreamed of becoming an actor despite growing up in difficult circumstances. His biggest childhood tragedy came when his father passed away while he was in elementary school, leaving his mother to raise him alone.
The actor has spoken candidly about the emotional impact of losing his father so young. “I grew up with a single mother. My father died when I was young. It was a huge loss, and I realized early on that life wasn’t easy. Looking back, I think I showed signs of depression as a child, but my mother’s love helped me overcome everything.”
Growing up in a low-income household also meant constantly worrying about school expenses and tuition. “I worried a lot about money. Even as a student, I felt enormous pressure over grades and finances.”
During his appearance on You Quiz on the Block in 2024, Ji Chang Wook revealed that his mother operated a Korean barbecue restaurant before later opening a small spicy fish soup restaurant to support the family.
Whenever the restaurants became busy, he stepped in to help. “Cleaning the barbecue grills was the hardest part. At the fish soup restaurant, cleaning the fish tanks was what I dreaded the most.” Watching his mother work tirelessly from morning until night motivated him to do everything he could to ease her burden.
Before becoming an actor, Ji Chang Wook took on numerous part-time jobs to help pay for his education. He worked at cafés, restaurants, and even as a cargo loader. The actor revealed that manual labor was the highest-paying job he ever had. “My mother and I couldn’t always afford my tuition. The highest-paying job I ever had was manual labor. My only goal was to make sure my mother would never have to worry about money again.”
Despite his academic excellence, Ji Chang Wook surprised his mother by choosing to study Theater and Film at Dankook University instead of pursuing a more stable profession. His mother worried that her quiet, introverted son was not suited for the entertainment industry, leading to disagreements between them.
To prove his commitment, Ji Chang Wook secretly worked part-time to pay for acting lessons before the university entrance examination. After only a few months of preparation, he successfully gained admission to Dankook University.
Ji Chang Wook began performing in theater productions and short films in 2006, later making his screen debut in the independent film Sleeping Beauty (2008). His breakthrough arrived in 2010 with the hit KBS drama Smile Again, which earned high ratings and won him the Best Actor Award at the KBS Drama Awards.

Speaking on You Quiz on the Block, he explained that after witnessing her sacrifices throughout his childhood, caring for her has become one of his greatest priorities. He shared that while his busy filming schedule often limits the time they spend together, he now sees it as his responsibility to take care of the woman who dedicated her life to raising him.
In a previous interview with Soompi, Ji Chang Wook said his biggest personal goal is simply to become “a better son.” His decision to continue living with his mother has earned praise from Korean fans, who view it as a reflection of his humility, gratitude, and strong family values.
