Hong Kong filmmaker and actor Stephen Chow, widely known as the “King of Asian Comedy,” remains one of the most influential figures in Chinese-language entertainment. Despite accumulating a fortune estimated at HK$2.6 billion (approximately US$330 million), Stephen Chow has earned a reputation for living an unusually modest and private life.

Born in 1962, Stephen Chow grew up in a poor neighborhood in Hong Kong. He joined TVB in 1981 and initially appeared in minor roles before landing his breakthrough role in 1989.

Throughout the 1990s, he became one of Hong Kong’s biggest box-office stars with hit films such as All for the Winner, Fight Back to School, and Flirting Scholar. In 1992 alone, seven of Hong Kong’s ten highest-grossing films starred Stephen Chow, cementing his status as a comedy icon. After starring in CJ7, he largely stepped away from acting to focus on directing and producing.

In addition to his success in film, Stephen Chow has invested in cinema businesses and real estate, helping him build a fortune reportedly worth HK$2.6 billion. However, those close to him say he lives far more simply than most celebrities of his stature. He is known for wearing plain T-shirts, using public transportation, riding a bicycle, and eating at small local restaurants. Reports have even claimed that he wore the same jacket for three years.

Known for his perfectionist personality, Stephen Chow has often been described by colleagues as demanding and meticulous on set. While these traits contributed to his success, they also reportedly strained some professional relationships.

His love life has also attracted attention over the years. The filmmaker was linked to several high-profile figures, including Athena Chu and Karen Mok, but never married. Some reports have suggested that witnessing his parents’ failed marriage left him reluctant to settle down.

Unlike fellow Hong Kong stars such as Andy Lau and Tony Leung, who remain active in public events and fan engagements, Stephen Chow has chosen a much quieter lifestyle. He rarely appears at social gatherings, keeps his personal life out of the spotlight, and maintains a small social circle. Despite his legendary status, Chinese media have often noted that he receives surprisingly few public birthday messages from entertainment industry peers.

To mark his 64th birthday, Stephen Chow shared an update on his upcoming film project, Kung Fu Girls. The filmmaker joked that the movie could be released on July 10 or July 17, adding that it might be delayed again if it is not ready in time.

The announcement has sparked excitement among longtime fans eager to see another project from the comedy legend, whose influence on Asian cinema remains as strong as ever.
