SBS has officially introduced one of its most anticipated dramas of the year, Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia, which is scheduled to premiere this October. The series is a Korean adaptation of the hugely successful Japanese franchise Doctor-X: Surgeon Michiko Daimon and combines medical drama elements with noir storytelling.

Rather than focusing solely on hospital life, the drama follows a gifted surgeon who confronts corruption and power struggles within the medical establishment, promising a darker and more suspenseful approach to the genre.

The drama is headlined by Kim Ji-won, who returns to the small screen approximately two years after the massive success of Queen of Tears. Queen of Tears became one of Korea’s most successful cable dramas, reaching a peak rating of 24.9% and cementing Kim Ji-won’s status as one of the industry’s leading actresses. In Doctor X, she will portray genius surgeon Gye Soo-jung, a talented doctor who challenges powerful figures controlling the medical world. The role marks another major milestone for the actress and her first SBS drama appearance since The Heirs.

Joining Kim Ji-won is an impressive lineup of veteran actors. Lee Jung-eun returns to SBS drama programming for the first time since Doctor Detective, while Son Hyun-joo makes his SBS comeback after a 12-year absence following Three Days. Actor Kim Woo-seok also joins the cast, creating a mix of experienced performers and younger stars. The strong casting has already generated considerable interest among drama fans ahead of the premiere.

The drama is directed by Lee Jung-rim, known for SBS hits including Revenant. Screenwriter Pyeon Sung-geun is responsible for the script. According to SBS, the story centers on a “dark hero” doctor entering a medical world controlled by corrupt figures in white coats, setting the stage for intense confrontations between morality and institutional power.

Medical dramas have long been among the most successful genres in Korean television. Classic series such as The General Hospital, White Tower, Golden Time, and Hospital Playlist helped establish the genre’s popularity. SBS also found tremendous success with Dr. Romantic, which became one of Korea’s most beloved medical franchises thanks to its strong ratings and emotional storytelling. More recently, medical-themed Korean content has continued gaining international recognition through streaming platforms, demonstrating the genre’s enduring appeal.

The biggest question surrounding Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia is how effectively it will adapt a beloved Japanese property for Korean audiences. With a proven source material, a respected production team, and a cast led by Kim Ji-won, Lee Jung-eun, and Son Hyun-joo, expectations are already high.

If the drama successfully balances medical suspense, noir storytelling, and character-driven conflict, SBS may have another major hit on its hands—and perhaps a worthy successor to its long-running tradition of successful medical dramas.
