As SBS’s long-running variety show Running Man prepares for a new chapter under a revamped production team, former cast members who left the show but remain deeply missed by fans are once again drawing attention.
On the May 31 broadcast of Running Man, producer Kim Solmaro officially joined the show as the successor to PD Kang Hyung Seon. When asked whether former producer Choi Bo Pil had offered any advice, Kim replied, “He told me to figure it out on my own. I received some very valuable advice,” raising anticipation for the show’s future direction.

Since its premiere in 2010, Running Man has maintained immense popularity thanks to its loyal fanbase and star-studded lineup. The program captivated viewers with unpredictable twists, large-scale missions filmed in entire buildings or custom-built sets, and creative penalties that kept audiences entertained week after week.
Just as important as the games, however, was the chemistry between its cast members. Led by Yoo Jae Suk, longtime members Ji Suk Jin, Kim Jong Kook, Haha, and Song Ji Hyo developed distinct personalities that helped solidify their positions as variety stars. Among them, original member Gary became especially beloved from 2010 to 2016 through his famous “Monday Couple” pairing with Song Ji Hyo. Their playful chemistry sparked endless speculation about whether the two were secretly dating in real life, making them one of the show’s most memorable duos. Fans were shocked when Gary unexpectedly announced his departure in October 2016. Although the production team reportedly tried to persuade him to stay, Gary ultimately chose to leave to focus more on his music career.
Later, during his final Running Man episode, Gary admitted, “I thought I would cry for about 30 minutes, but why did everyone arrive so early? It felt overwhelming.”

Another departure that left viewers heartbroken came in 2021, when Lee Kwang Soo famously nicknamed the “Icon of Betrayal” announced he would leave the program. The actor had undergone ankle surgery following a traffic accident in 2020 and continued rehabilitation treatment after returning to filming. However, due to the physically demanding nature of Running Man, he eventually decided stepping away was necessary. At the time, his agency explained, “Because this has been a meaningful part of his life for 11 years, it was not an easy decision. However, we determined he needed physical time to show better sides of himself in future activities.” Lee Kwang Soo also shared a heartfelt message through social media, saying, “I received more love than I deserved and created joyful memories every week for 11 years. Thank you sincerely for everything.”

Jeon So Min, who joined the show in 2017 and helped fill the gap left by Gary, also announced her departure in 2023 after six years on the show. At the time, her agency King Kong by Starship stated, “After much consideration, Jeon So Min has decided to leave Running Man. She plans to focus on acting and other activities moving forward.” Known for nicknames such as “Fire Moth,” “Female Lee Kwang Soo,” and “Magnet Human,” Jeon So Min became one of the show’s standout personalities, leaving many fans saddened by the news.

Although she initially did not explain her reasons in detail, Jeon So Min later opened up during a 2025 appearance on TV Chosun’s Heo Young Man’s Food Travel, describing Running Man as “a truly happy workplace.” However, she also revealed that malicious online comments had taken a toll on her. “The more attention you receive, the more hurtful things happen,” she explained. “If the criticism had a valid reason, I would reflect deeply, but from my perspective, many of the hateful comments felt baseless.”
Since her exit, fans have consistently expressed hopes for her return and nostalgia for her unique chemistry with the cast. Interest recently surged again after reports emerged that Jeon So Min would make a guest appearance on Running Man. In a preview clip released by SBS on May 31, she was seen joining a race alongside actor Kim Kyung Nam. Marking her first appearance in roughly three years, both the members and viewers warmly welcomed her return, while Jeon So Min effortlessly slipped back into the familiar dynamic with her signature bright energy.

In the preview footage, Jeon So Min showcased the same sharp variety instincts and cheerful personality that fans remembered, making her chemistry with the members feel instantly natural despite the long break.
Though Gary, Lee Kwang Soo, and Jeon So Min each left Running Man for different reasons, they remain iconic figures closely associated with the show. Their strong impact on viewers has ensured that calls for their return continue long after their departures.
As Running Man moves forward under a new production system and promises fresh changes, viewers remain equally invested in the future of the show and nostalgic for the former members who helped shape its unforgettable memories.
