The new zombie thriller Colony starring Jun Ji Hyun, Ji Chang Wook, and Koo Kyo Hwan is dominating the Korean box office after recording the biggest opening-day performance of 2026.
According to the Korean Film Council, Colony attracted 199,768 moviegoers on its first day of release on May 21, immediately taking the No.1 spot at the domestic box office. The achievement is considered especially impressive as the film premiered on a Thursday during Korea’s low-season theatrical period.
The movie has now surpassed the opening-day records of other major Korean releases this year, including The King’s Warden with 117,783 admissions and Salmokji: Whispering Water with 89,911 admissions.
As of May 22, Colony had accumulated 448,341 viewers and approximately 4.89 billion won in total revenue.

Directed by Yeon Sang Ho, the film takes place inside a skyscraper in central Seoul, where survivors become trapped after a mysterious infection seals off the building. The characters must fight against infected creatures capable of evolving in unpredictable ways.
Unlike traditional zombie films, Colony introduces infected humans who function as a collective intelligence system capable of learning and developing advanced herd behavior. The unique concept has become one of the film’s biggest talking points among audiences.
The project marks Yeon Sang Ho’s third zombie feature following the massive success of Train to Busan and Peninsula. However, many viewers noted that Colony feels darker and more psychologically intense, particularly during its visually shocking second half.
The film has also attracted major attention thanks to its star-studded lineup. For Jun Ji Hyun, Colony marks her first return to the big screen in 11 years since Assassination.

Jun Ji Hyun plays biotechnology professor and survivor leader Kwon Se Jung, while Koo Kyo Hwan portrays Seo Young Chul, a genius biologist responsible for triggering the outbreak.
Meanwhile, Ji Chang Wook stars as building security employee Choi Hyun Seok. The cast also includes Shin Hyun Been, Kim Shin Rok, and Go Soo.
Speaking about her decision to join the project, Jun Ji Hyun said, “Everyone loves director Yeon’s work, and so do I. Working with a director who has such a distinct style and message gives actors a sense of freedom.”
Before its Korean release, Colony was invited to the Midnight Screening section at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. Following the screening at the Lumière Grand Theatre, audiences reportedly gave the film a seven-minute standing ovation.
Industry insiders believe the strong word-of-mouth generated from Cannes significantly contributed to the film’s explosive domestic opening. Government-issued movie discount vouchers are also believed to have boosted early ticket sales.
According to industry estimates, Colony reportedly has a break-even point of around 3 to 4 million admissions based on its 20 billion won production budget. However, the number is said to have decreased considerably after the film secured pre-sales distribution deals across 120 international markets.
