On the evening of May 10, Chinese outlet Sohu reported that Weibo had been flooded with claims alleging Kris Wu had already been released from prison and was preparing to board a flight from Shenzhen back to Canada.

The speculation quickly became one of the hottest topics online, with many netizens questioning how the disgraced former celebrity could allegedly secure an early release despite his lengthy sentence.

According to the court’s original ruling, Kris Wu still has several years remaining on his prison term. Under his current sentence, he would reportedly need to remain incarcerated for at least eight more years before becoming eligible for release.

However, prison authorities and related government agencies have not issued any official confirmation regarding the rumors. Chinese media outlets stated they are still attempting to verify the claims with the relevant departments.

At the same time, many internet users urged the public not to spread unverified information, arguing that the reports appear groundless until an official statement is released.

This is not the first major rumor involving Kris Wu since his imprisonment.

Previously, false claims circulated online alleging that the former idol had died in prison. Chinese outlet 163 later denied those rumors, reporting that Kris Wu remained in stable condition and did not suffer from any severe health issues while incarcerated.

Sources cited by Chinese media also claimed there was no truth to speculation that he had fallen into extreme mental distress or died following additional tax-related penalties.

Reports instead alleged that Kris Wu maintained a regular diet, gained nearly 10 kilograms during imprisonment, and continued receiving close monitoring regarding his mental health.

Kris Wu’s downfall began in 2021 after influencer Du Meizhu publicly accused him of sexual assault and manipulative behavior involving multiple young women, including minors.

The scandal shocked the Chinese entertainment industry, as Kris Wu had been one of the country’s most commercially powerful celebrities and was also widely known internationally as a former member of EXO.

Chinese authorities later confirmed several criminal charges against the former singer. Investigators concluded that between November and December 2020, Kris Wu sexually assaulted three intoxicated women at his residence. Authorities also determined that he organized group sexual activities involving friends and additional women in July 2018.

The court ultimately sentenced Kris Wu to 13 years in prison. He was also ordered to be deported and banned from re-entering China for 10 years after completing his sentence.

His appeal against the ruling was later rejected.

Chinese media additionally reported in 2025 that Kris Wu and his mother became involved in a major tax evasion case allegedly involving approximately 300 million yuan, potentially increasing the severity of his legal consequences.

As of now, there has been no verified confirmation that Kris Wu has been released from prison or deported to Canada.
